I have a 12" bucket and have never had a problem with dirt sticking or having to remove anything from the bucket by hand. Haven't run in to a situation yet where 2" smaller would seemed to have been an advantage. No experience with a 10" bucket but no issues with the 12".

I have the 10" and have dug plenty of clay. Once in a while you may have to clean it; it's no big deal. I would not want the bigger bucket; just means I have to fill in (buy) more material (gravel, sand, etc.)

While there may be a theoretical difference between the 10" and 12" buckets, I don't think that there is much of a real world difference between the two when it comes to digging force. However, when it comes to digging trenches for irrigation, electric lines, etc., the 12" width is very desirable. You might have the assumption that the 10" bucket lets you move less dirt for the 1" PVC or for the 4" drainage line, but if you have to work inside the hole you just dug, the little extra width of the 12" bucket is a very big deal. The rental companies, etc. all have 12" buckets for that very reason.
