Alright here is some of tonights progress. got the double shear pieces cut and welded in. the diaganol support pieces cut and welded in. the stab spikes are welded on. still need to cap the bottom piece and cap the main spear. then paint. i think it is a bit heavier than i had wanted but it should do.

Just out of curiosity, since I don't have any round bales(or square for that matter) I thought round bales and mid sizes cuts don't mix? I was under the impression from other post on TBN that round bales were too large to lift with fel and I didn't think you'd be able to carry two. That L3400 is comparable to a JD 3320 in size right? Oh nice fab work on the spear.

i have had a couple of comments like that. whether or not they are "supposed" to mix i dont know. what i do know. My Loader is rated at ~1500#'s Most rounds i get are about 900-1100 for a 4x5 and 1300-1500 for a 5x6. the ones in the pictures are 4x5's and the load averaged out at 990 a bale when he brought then in from Florida. they were probably a bit heavier due to the 1/2" of Ice build up from the northern that blew through. Not famaliar with the JD 3320 but the L3400 wieghs in at ~2600 without loader or loaded rears.

Is the L3400 supposed to be able to do what i do with it?? who knows??? Will it do it?? It will and I have proof :D :D :D

Good to know. A JD 3320 weighs 2900 empty. The loader I have will lift just under 1400lbs. How does the tractor handle with one on the hitch and one on the loader?

That spear looks great!
Just a few questions for you as I'm finally going to build one myself.
1. Is there a reason not to mount the main spear at the top of the bucket? It would give me much better visibility.
2. When moving a bale, if you tip the bucket down to dump over a fence. Does the bottom of the spear assemble slip off the bucket?
Thanks,
Rocky

1. The reason i mounted it toward the bottom, One of the tubes is welded on top of the horizontal piece. i then notched the vertical piece to fit over the tube then welded it on the front and the back. the leverage on the top tube is put on the actual vertical piece and then transmitied to the pins at the top. You can see it this pic

You could do what i did on my rear one if you want the spear more towards the top. i cut a hole in both sides and then weld the spear on the front and back.

2. i dont feed over a fence but yes when you tilt forward it rotates on the pins. when you roll it back up it slides right back into place. i have found it useful like that. When loading on a trailer and if you dont have the spear completely level it rotates on the pins and slides right out and when it clears the bale is falls back into place on the bucket. has worked well for me.

I have liked this because there is no leverage placed on the leading edge of the bucket. all the leverage force it put on the pins at the top of the bucket where i fell it is stronger, especially where i put the tabs on the break over bend.
