It does look like both the rod extension and the end cap should be unscrewed to allow dis-assembly. I would start ahead of time soaking with a penetrating oil! (PB Blaster is my personally favorite)
First, it's probably easier to leave the cylinder connected to the machine at the rear while you take it apart...
After you get the end cap off, use the piston like a slide hammer to pull itself out of the cylinder. Be sure to look for hidden retaining rings before pulling to hard if it does not come out right away. Once the rod is out you will have full access to the seals.
