I know it's kind of a strange question, but can anyone suggest a good bug repellant/spray? Many of you live in areas with major mosquito and other bug pests and I figured I could get some advice. I need to bring my own repellant with me to the La/Mississippi area.

Thanks,

Use any spray that has deet in it. Also try an army surplus store, the US. army has wonderful bug juice (cheap too)

Ditto what tractor ernie said.... A DEET containing spray is what is 'recomended'.. and when i sent my wife to china on vacation.. I sent her with usmilsurp bug repellant.. cheap cheap.. but worked.

Now.. If I were at 'home'... I'd just hit my clothes with some farnam 'white bottle' fly spray... good for flies/mosquito, and MOST flying insects as well as fleas and ticks.. has light citronella scent bugs seem hate, and a tad bit of pyrethins... course it says 'animal use only'.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I like Off Skintastic. For some reason I'm sensitive to strong DEET and it makes me feel kind of ill. I used Off Skintastic when I lived on Orlando and it worked pretty good. It even seemed to keep the ticks and chiggers off when I would go hiking in Ocala and the woods around Gainesville. (not just sitting around) It doesn't smell too bad either.

Of course, if you are not sensitive to DEET and don't mind stinking a bit then go with something stronger. I'm not sure what LA has will be any worse then the back woods of Washington during a bad mosquito season.

The only things I found different in the south were the size of the bugs (they are alot bigger) and they had a lot more ticks. They have a lot more bugs too. Watch out for fire ants - they are really bad and aggressive. Avoid stepping on small ant hills as they will swarm up your leg and then start biting and it burns like you are on fire. Hopefully, the water will kill some of the fire ant colonys off although I've seen video of big balls of fire ants floating on the water as they crawl on top of each other they make this strange spinning ball that seems to prevent them from drowning.

Thanks for helping out - you're doing a good thing!
