David, how are things going with your backhoe. I just ordered a bunch of fittings from Hydraulichosefittings.com. I believe I am going to run those hoses inside the boom tube. I think the hoses will be protected more, and give a more cleaner look. Most backhoes I see, have hoses all over the place. I am planning to reinforce the hose connection points before I install the bulkhead fittings, Electric valves or manual valves, I am still debating that. Maybe a mixture would work out.

Good to hear yours is really making progress!

Manual valves for a BH. You need to have variable control on up to 3 spools at the same time.

I didn't mean to imply manual valve. I meant lever/joy stick or electric valves., or even electric joystick. I should have been finished a year ago. It is amazing, that retirement does not mean retirement. Slowly but surely, I will have every thing put together. I was just at the hydraulic store, and learned that they will not crimp hydraulic cable and fittings that I bring in. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif They will make up hydraulic lines for you at so much per ft, plus fittings, plus labor. $40.00 plus tax for a 6 ft cable is steep. I can order it off the internet for about 1/3 to 1/2 of that price. I was hoping to cut hose to length, gather up fittings and Git er done. I have a crimping set, but have never crimped any thing. Their are some critical things to know before crimping. One wire, two wire, square hose cut, right amount of pressure. I thought it was crimp and go. Has any one used those screw on reusable fittings? It seems that I never stop learning. That 2 years of French I had in school was a total waste. Why didn't they teach me to weld and fix hydraulic hoses? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can maybe give a little advice, but not likely enough:

Burst pressure is going to be around 4X operating [thus your safety factor is already built in]. So a 2500psi hose will be fine even with 3ksi relief (espcially consering operating psi isn't going to be at relief - just a second every so often). There is some newer single wire hose rated at 3ksi, more flexible than 2 wire, handles the loads: no-brainer! Otherwise 2 wire should have no trouble, but I'd still check the ratings.

Unless you can get specs for your crimper (I wanted to buy one but the $$$s just didn't add up - espcially when I considered the same unknowns you're seeing) & dies, I don't know what to say. I know in really old dies were brand specific, then there were universal dies, but it seems now there are "new" style fittings using a new universal die.

The screw type looked a little bulky to me, but maybe it was my imagination. I still trusted a crimp more anyway. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Pricing around here is a better than that, so I found an amiable solution to the crimping. I asked them if I could buy a total lenth of hose and the fittings (so I could cut and assemble in place) then bring them back for crimping. They had no problem, and I got about 5 hoses made for under $100. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm not not quite sure which types you're comparing. I thought you meant a spool with a lever (or joystick) as opposed to solenoid activated spools.

If so, I said manual, because the solenoids I'm thinking of are On/Off which no ability to be variable. I think there are variable solenoid valves, but no idea of price or availability.

That price seems reasonable enough, but what were the lengths. I need 8 hoses for my backhoe.

Not today, but I can dig up the receit sometime; however, I recall the hose $ being small compared to the fittings. The crimp charge was maybe $1 or $2 (I think the former).

I was only running 2ft (and I think one 6ft) lenths, but it was 1/2". If you follow PT's design, you're fine with 1/4". I'd prefer 3/8" for easy flow, but the tighter bend radius is nice considering the scale we're looking at.

The hose cost was a bit more expensive than I thought. Even at that I can't imagine 1/4" being over 2/3 the price of 1/2".

$3.29 per foot of 1/2 inch high pressure single wire (Gates 70487). I only bought 5ft (I forgot I already had 4ft).

Crimp to 8JIC [straight] were $5.99 each.

The labor was only $1.00 each! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Daughter's first communion next week. Getting yard ready for big celebration.
Friends have new grand daughter.
Wife went camping.

Oh, yeah, I work, too. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Keep the ideas, suggestions and comments regarding backhoe coming. I will use them all. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I am appreciating the hose and fitting comments greatly, as I haven't priced that part of things at all.
