Ovrszd is your shop for your business or just toys/recreation/storage? We built our home on the upper level of our building about 13 years ago. 2150 sq/ft. We moved out and built a new home about 4 years ago 4 miles away. The house in our shop worked great for us but our shop was also our business. I eventually found it very hard to separate work from home. I always felt like I should be working on something or customers would show up and I was back to work again. It is really nice now to leave work at work and head home for the day, even if only 4 miles away.

Pure pleasure.

I bought some Jeep fenders from a guy in Colorado few years ago. He started his business in his backyard. He loved it. Then the business grew. Suddenly he found himself in the trap you describe. I've not visited with him for 5-6 years. Don't know how it worked out for him. Great guy. All of a sudden found himself trapped by his own creation. :)

I can relate. We were in the same boat. We started our business a couple years before building the shop/home. One thing I did find funny was peoples reaction when they walked into the house. Almost everyone seemed shocked with the most common comment being "this looks like a real home". I think there was a disconnect with peoples perception of what a home inside a building would look like. I liked to tell them that "yes it does look like a real home, we even have carpet and sheetrock". Lol.

Do any of you guys have pictures of how the ceilings of the home were constructed inside a steel building?
We are planning on building a 50x100 steel building barndominium, half house and half garage/shop in a couple years, and I can’t picture how the ceilings would be constructed. Is it just 2x10s spanning the width of the rooms? It seems like you would need some kind of truss to span anything more than 15 feet.

Ours was constructed uaing I-joists. Been a long time since I looked at a chart but since its non-snow load you should be able to span 25+ feet depending on size used.

We built a metal building, barndominium style home in 2011. Also built a metal building detached garage addition in 2018.
