I'm looking for information on how to build a bridge over a creek. The creek is about 20' wide and I have a Ford 8N tractor that I will driving across it.

Just a thought - we have a company in Syracuse that deals in old railroad ties, rails, connecting plates etc. The tracks look to be about 40 foot long. Two or three of those would probably be sufficient for the base and you could just use 2 x 10 for decking.

I'll take a ride later today and get the phone number. Don't know if they have a website. I think the ties were $10 each. You can pick or they deliver. Don't know about the tracks but know they have to be HEAVY. (Though I WOULD like to see what wrought n harv could make with some of those things!!!!!!/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif)

My engineer stepson and I were considering a similar situation on our property, where a 12'-15' wide drainage swale runs into the lake across one of our walking trails. It is only about 4'-5' deep at the center. We both thought that a couple of 20' telephones, attached to 4 well-anchored concrete piers at each end, topped with 2x6 decking was the answer. I think you can get longer length poles for your situation. Did we do it yet? Nope. ALWAYS GLAD TO HELP A FELLOW 8N OWNER. Don't you feel like a step-child around here with all of these yuppie tractor owners?/w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Multiple threads from the past may help out:

Railroad car beds, truck beds, telephone poles, I-beams are useful.

Railroad rails are not - they have excellent strength on ties, but little free span strength.

All of the info on used telephone poles got me to thinking about a project where I need to build a retaining wall partly in a pond.

Anybody know if the creosote in the old poles will kill the fish?

I'm gonna watch this thread closely for ideas. I've got a customer who wants real bad to have a walk bridge across the creek to the first Olympic sized swimming pool north of Dallas. A quick guess is seventy feet clear span.

He wants it to look old and wood but have a steel frame. I know it can be done. But done and me haven't got together and talked about it yet.
