building a chicken coop that can be moved

I think 3RRL built a mobile chicken coop in his 3R Home and Barn Project a couple of years ago. I can't do a search right now, heading to work, but take a look. It was a chicken coop that could be moved from place to place but still allowed the chickens to eat bugs and such right from the ground. Careful, you can burn a lot of time in his thread, very interesting.

There's someone over the line in Del that has two farm wagons that appear to be copies of what you saw in the moves in the 50's that Gypsy's used to live in. Like this ..(but not quite so Luxe)

They're really cool and look great out on their pasture.

Growing up in the NC mountains I saw lots of folks raise chickens in an abandoned car. My dad always said to be sure to use a 2-door for a coop because a 4-door car would be a chicken-sedan. Either one can be moved.

That one still cracks me up and I laughed all day when I read it first time!

A classic well done sir thanks for the laugh!:laughing:

Utility trailer w/ the floor stripped off and replaced w/ wire, then just build the top how you want it. I've seen em done w/ cotton trailers using tin sides and roof too, bigger but you can walk in them and collect eggs and such. Both would require you move with the tractor, remember you have to move the water w/ you also. A chicken will only go about 150 yards or so, so don't move too far or they will be lost.
As to the chickens and turkeys, as poults/peeps they don't work together. That is where blackfeet is the issue. Once they are grown they are fine together. You also don't want to mix grown w/ peeps, same issue, something to do w/ the poop and the little ones eating it.

go to backyard chickens.com they have a ton of different set ups.
I would think that the lighter the better. maby use pvc as frame and zip tie chicken wire over it, maby put a set of wheels on it to move it around.
or get an umbrella base and a 10 piece of pipe if you find that bird netting you can make a very easy moved set up. just put some rocks on the edges and its in place.

Hi Ed, thanks for the plug man!
From what I gather, Michelle needs a much larger coop than I made, but I do have that thread book marked. It might be of some value ... at least for ideas?

A coop is an essential place for all the chickens as it is like a home to all your chickens on your farm. The procedure for building the coop is not that difficult. The coop is great if you have many chickens to take care of as not only it gives shelter to chickens; it also protects the chickens of the cold and various other factors. There are many types of coops that you can make depending upon the size of coop you want to build and the number of chickens.

Before starting to build a basic coop there are many factors to keep in mind such as.

Decide the location of the coop: The site of the coop should such that there is ventilation and enough sunlight available to the chickens.

Decide the size of coop: The size depends on the number of chickens. Generally, one chicken needs 3 to 6 square foot area. You can calculate the approximate area depending on the number of the chickens.

Plan the area of the coop: make sure that there is a nesting area for chickens to lay eggs, a feeder, and a well-ventilated area. See to it that the coop has accessible areas for food and water.

Once you have planned the coop, it is now time to start the procedure of making a basic coop for your chickens. I am going to describe the process step-by-step for making it more comfortable for all readers to follow the procedure.

The first step is to make a structure for the coop. Make a frame for the coop by cutting the vertical battens out of the wood and joining the battens together as per the coop layout decided while planning.

Join all the battens with the help of screws and then fix the roof trusses of the coop once the roof and the basic structure of the coop are ready to proceed for the side panels and the flooring of the coop.

Fix all the side panels, rail-bridge in the roof and the flooring of the coop with the help of screws. Make sure that fittings are proper.

Once everything is joined together check for the final fittings and fixtures.

Make the opening in the panels of the coop wherever required and also make a nesting box in the coop for the chickens to lay their eggs.

Make sure that the openings are such that the coop remains ventilated always.

After all, this is done to paint the coop and voila your coop is now ready for your chickens.

For making it more comfortable for the chickens keep some bedding material on the floor of the coop. Also, make sure that there is a place for chicken feeders in the coop as well to give them food.
