I just saw the post "Re-Decking a Trailer" and it made me think of a project I would like to tackle. I have an old wagon with sidewalls (think it was used for grain and a chain across the middle that holds the sides in under load. It has electric brand wagon gear, and a nice dump cylinder. The only problem is the floor and wooden supports are shot. I would like to replace them but I wasn't sure what wood was best to use for this? Are there plans anywhere that detail how to build a deck on wagon gear and what wood to use? I would like to retain the original dimensions and plan so I can still use the old sides as they are a combination of rivets and metal bracing, and the wood is just faded but still good.

What I would like to do is remove the sidewall assemblies and replace the support (joists?) with something suitable and then redeck and reattach the sides. Can anyone recommend a wood species for this?

White oak would be your best bet.

Look for a sawmill around that can cut you some timbers, and some cross supports. Then deck the floor with treated decking.

That's great! I have some nice white oaks on my property and a neighbor with a sawmill /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. I guess I just use an identical dimension to what was previously there?
