I have a question that maybe someone can answer. I made a shooting range in my back yard. All is well except I can't figure out how the best way would be to pick up the spent brass. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I thought about using steel cased ammo and buying one of those long flat magnets on wheels, but I've heard that they don't really work well in grass. Besides, I literally have thousands of rounds of various caliber ammo with brass casings. Short of doing a sort of "Easter egg hunt" after shooting, I don't know what to do. Being that the range is in my back yard (literally), I mow weekly. A spent casing being hit by a mower blade is almost like having the mower shooting. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
For now, I've tried parking my RTV to where the spent shells fly into the bed of it when spent. The screen between the bed and cab does a good job of knocking some of the fliers down. But, a lot miss the RTV, and some fall between the bed and cab. That's not good because they fall down on the engine and transmission. Spent brass really probably isn't good to allow to collect there. Ideas?

Last time I took my suburban in for some engine work, the mechanic handed me a handful of .22 casing her pulled from the top of the grill somewhere.
We'd been using the hood as a benchrest the last time at the farm--and a lot of the brass was captured here!

Why not pour a concrete pad, build a custom shooting bench, put a roof over it for shade and a wall on the side to catch the brass.
The wall could be something clever with a concave surface the angles to a buckte to catch the brass. Kind of a giant, kind of flat funnel that's sideways.

Get one of those portable picnic shelters with the screen sides and accordion tops. The one that I have has zippers at each end and ties that will hold the opened end up. For the floor area use the heavy landscaping mesh that nurseries use. May work for you. It can be easily moved or collapsed and stored and between the enclosed sides and floor mesh you should be able to catch all of your cartridges. This may not be big enough, but you can get them custom built to your specifications.

Tex - been a while since I've looked at this thread - A good source for Range plans would be the NRA. They may have something on their web site, or try one of the Gun Boards.
We had our Annual Youth Day today at our Range and gave the youth (Male and Female) an opportunity to shoot trap, air guns and .22s. The young ones pick up info fast - we naturally stress gun safety, but also teach them to load, aim, etc. A lot of happy kids.
