Building a terraced road/trail across a slope

The tool for the job is a turn plow. Ease along the top side with the plow throwing the soil down hill. Do that a couple of times and then go back with a road blade or box blade and you are done. I have seen it done by my dad and it worked well. Very well, and quick.

I like that idea. What about one of those old one-bottom plows (walk behind) and have a friend pull it with a winch. Make a couple passes & maybe the tractor can do the rest. Gotta use your tractor; it costs you money to NOT use your eqpt.

I did it the way you propose. Tilted the box blade, backed in from level, worked three feet at a time; until the pucker factor was reduced. At that point you can work longer sections either in this orientation or turn around.

Oh yes, had the rippers down on the high side but none on the low side.

Thanks to you all, I've got a number of options to try so I'm going to try and get to it this weekend. I'm also going to thin out that section of woods a bit as well so I can get enough sunlight in there to get some grass growing as well to prevent erosion. Wish me luck.

That would work, just watch for roots and rocks.

We just did about exactly the same thing on our "back 40" on the steep slope down to the creek/ponds. Had a road cut snaking down and then across then down again to the bottom. A guy with a big excavator did the job in two hours. All trees tipped over with their roots, so no stumps, and he was able to run those big full buckets of dirt over to wherever we needed extra dirt (a lot of places when you live on sloped land) and even smooth them out a bit. We got a whole lot done in a couple hours for a few hundred bucks, without the pucker factor. There will still be hours of fun waiting for you and your tractor doing the fine grading, putting in a ditch and a crown, smoothing out any gouges from the tracks, dragging out the downed trees, etc., etc. JMO
