Building a trailer

   / Building a trailer #21
I'm going to have to buy more "stuff" next weekend.I used the webcam this afternoon also but the power was off so they are to dark to be usefull ,I believe.

i'm still not quite positive - are the fenders totally outside of the deck, or does the deck encompass the fenders? looking at the pictures, i'm assuming that you are going to mount your springs to the carrying members that are running the length of the trailer? if so, you are going to have a very narrow track because you can't have the springs very far away from the hubs or your axle tubes will bend easily.

if you are still going to be adding another piece of 3x3 tube at each side to connect all the crossmembers then you would be able to use that to attach your springs to - assuming that the fenders and wheels are completely outside the deck. also, having a 3x3 out there and the 3x3 members as a subframe is actually going to help stiffen things up considerably.

having built a couple smaller trailers for quads, utility and a couple car trailers, I wanted my next one to be heavy enough and wide enought to handle a big tractor, fullsize crew cab truck and ease of getting into tight spots.

I got a trailer frame from work that was an old generator trailer that was 52" wide (between fenders) and 12' long rated to haul 12K payload. it was built out of 6" C channel ( the heavier of the two versions, can't remember weight off the topof my head). IT had 5" C channel crossmenbers. I cut it all apart, lengthed it to 18.5 feet and widened it to 82" deck an added 2' to the tongue. (widest I could go and still be at the max legal 102" fender to fender width. I replaced the 5" C channel crossmembers with 3" and added them every 12". The deck is pressure treated 2x12s. Other than the tongue being heavier than it should (getting reworked this winter). I had to move into my new house sooner than planned, so it isn't totally finished, but totally legal and 100% functionable. I literally have 350 bucks in this trailer. I bought it from work for 100 bucks because they were scrapping them because they couldnt handle the weight of our new generators. This one had brand new electric brakes(both axles) and new tires. I bought the 3" channel and the lights. i got the toolbox from a buddy and the deck came from a jobsite. it was used for steps at big golf event for a week and then they were going to throw it out! Awesome trailer and strong as ****. too much for what my truck is rated to pull! lol One day I'll have a diesel....
