Building our new dam

With strong recommendation from Check and Brandi, I reckon I'll have to find some Crown Royal to sample - sounds well worthwhile!
Definitely, definitely try it. I usually drink it, unless I'm wanting my favorite drink............Magaritas!
hugs, Brandi

I have never seen how a mini Dam is created. You have put a ton of work there.

Hello there Lucky, :) I'm glad you are finding it interesting too. You're right - there's more than a bit of work involved. ;) I've seen over a dozen dams built - mostly for water for cattle, but that was decades ago  when I was a boy, growing up on our family dairy farm. I'd never been involved in building one ..... until now. Relying only on my memory of watching dozer operators working, and betting on my ability, this is the (almost) finished project. Now only tidying up, watering newly-germinated grass and periodic fertiliser application should be all that's left.

I'm just a little bit puzzled by your term "mini dam" is that a Canadian expression we here in Aussie don't know of, although I believe you may mean a dam of a much smaller capacity than the normal supply-the-town's-water-needs type dam? We refer to those as "reservoirs". This one of mine is only about 22mx26m - it's a little oval, and will fill about 3.5m, not as big as my neighbour's, but just a little larger than our first dam. I can't wait to see them both full! :D

Before, during and after ... what do you reckon?

I reckon you are so good on the equipment with those smooth side hills, that your family should let you spread the icing on every birthday cake!

I would be much better at eating the birthday cake (or any other cake) my better half can cook anything extremely well, and evicts me from the kitchen!

Also ... it took ages to get those slopes the way I wanted them!
Another funny thing - after I raked lightly to cover the seed, a lot must have settled into the cleat marks, so now in most places it looks like it's been sown in rows! :D

Very nice work. Your photos and explanation are great. Interesting that I spend a lot of time shaping my land so it will shed water and not pool up while you ( and many others ) try to trap water.

Hi Gordon, and thank you - I thought if it helps someone doing a similar thing, great. :D A picture is worth a thousand words, they say.

As far as catching (or draining) water goes - it's either a feast or a famine. I ran out of dam water for vege garden and fruit trees twice in three years and had to pump from my good neighbour's dam to keep them growing. I can't rely on someone else to keep topping up my needs ... how would I feel if they also ran out? So we came up with a solution - we have channelled run-off water into his and my dams, instead of down the hill into some creek.
This will ensure that we both have plenty, and I can pump as much as the gardens need.

That looks beautiful, Patrick! Nice work! Doesn't matter how much time it took, the end result is stunning!

Hi Shaeff, thanks mate, and great to see you are back online. I'm dreaming of being able to post a pic of it overflowing - although that may be a year away!:p But that won't necessarily be bad because it will give added time for everything to settle a bit more. Meanwhile that grass grows so slowly! ;)

For sure! And yeah I haven't been able to get online much, life gets in the way!
