Building steps in old home

Don't forget your head room, when you get part of the way up. The reason I mention this is... several years ago I was going up stairs in a NEW house and hit my head on the sheetrock corner bead hard enough to create a slight dent.
Yea.. I know "hard headed" what ever. But it sure did smart. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

When framing stairs out of dimensional lumber I recommend the following:
Growth rings on the treads always face down. Use plenty 3" screws and construction adhesive to prevent squeeky steps.

Also remember if you are making custom stringers you want the height of all the rises to be the same EXCEPT for the bottom step. It needs to be cut down so when you add your first floor board you are still at the height you wanted. The next ones all have a board at the step above and below so they cancel out. Make sense?

That's at the uphill end of the porch. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif The cleaning lady is still able to climb the stairs, but in the last 10 years my wife and her sister have quit that foolishness. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
