Building vs Truck

I deal in trucks for a living. Keep your 100,000 mile Chevy and build your building. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bo: I made the plunge and put up a Morton Shop/garage three years ago, and if it burned down tomorrow, I'd do it again without a second thought. They did what they said they'd do, when they said, etc., and did it first class. Maybe you can save 20% or so, but it ain't worth it, if you plan on using the building yourself for any length of time.

I'm leanin' hard toward the building now. I have my brother in law (attorney) working on the deed over the weekend. Also, I do have a contractor working on a bid for the same size building (stud wall) with vinyl siding...I'm still leaning toward the Morton.

I've built my own buildings, have 40'X60'X15' stud wall and vinyl siding for shop, 30X54'X13' pole barn w/ all steel side and roof for storage.
U will really like the stud wall for insulating and finishing inside.
I used 2x6 YP studs,1/2" osb outside and R-19 in walls then 5/8" drywall (firecode rating) green on bottom 4' and regular rest of way.
This way welding or cutting is safe and can wash vehicles inside too.
I would lean to stud constrution for heated work shop.

Keep your truck, and keep it maintained. The newer engines go for a long time. My 89' Ford f250 with a 351 had 225k miles on it when I sold it. It ran great, and was still a solid, clean truck. It had a bit over 200k on it when we took the camper and all, and did a western US/Canada tour for about 4000 miles. Ran like a champ.

On the Chevy, you can get a factory crate motor for a pretty good deal too, if the miles do really get up there.

I would not worry much till 200-250k miles, if you keep it maintaind well.

Still working on the deed thing. I have to get a survey crew in before I can get a deed. Man, this is a learning process.
I'm still nearly positive that Morton is the way I'm going.
If I have a stud wall building there will be 2-3 blocks above the floor to be used as a washboard.

First I want to say that I would go for the building. But heres some things to think about....

100K is not a lot of miles for a newer car, or truck. Most will do 200+ with any care.

In 5 years how much is that truck, and building going to cost?

If you buy the truck, you will be in this same posision in 5 more years.

I'm a Ford guy, and would rather have a Ford truck, then a Chevy. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The new truck will last say 10 years at your rate. How long will the building last?

You don't know what is coming down the road. Get the building, and you wil be done with it. Just think of it this way. When the truck you have hits 200-300K, you will have a nice place to work on it in. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Since you've decided to go with the building instead of the truck, let me offer some unsolicited advice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Do a Google seach for 'structural insulated panel' online. I think you might decide they're a good option for your intended uses. I've seen structures build with them and they're really nice. The R-values are great, the structural integrity is superior to anything besides concrete and they're really quiet, too. Besides all of that, you can be under roof in two days.

Update. Since I'll have to get a deed from my mom to build my building I'm waiting on the survey crew and they are a little behind.
I was getting ready to start the garden, the ground is all tilled up...Mom then told me my brothers and sister prefered I build the garage where the garden sits...Hmm, I hadn't considered this at all and it's actually better since it will have a large yard in the front.
So the garden may no happen this year, and it looks as if the building will be started in late spring or early summer.
