Built a Deck this weekend...

I am afraid it wouldnt be cheap with the travel involved.

Luckily for me LD1 lives much closer lol

Looks great LD1, been wanting to add on on back of house here in town but the Mansfield [st]****[/st] building Inspectors makes everything so difficult...

Been planning on putting in screen door on back (pulling out twin windows that are original to home.) Then adding small free standing deck outside the house foundation but not tied to it. Though they changed to include any and all decks garaged sheds et all..
Did ya take the DOG and have him take care of any of the worms and bugs that came crawling out while building it?

I cant believe they are raising such a stink for a free standing deck. Glad I live in morrow county

What type wood for the deck boards ? Just Curious , We used Cedar for the deck and D.F. for all framing .

We used 2" x 6" for all the framing and joists on our's , span is only 8' but it runs the length of the house . We were limited on the back side of House due to the rear yard that we wanted to save thus limited deck width .


Love your Workmanship and the use of natural wood . The synthetic stuff may last " Longer " ( ??? ) with less maintenance , But it does not match the Beauty of Natural Wood .

Honestly, I dont really know what the species of wood was.

Its just treated lumber from menards. But I think it is mostly SYP

Great looking... like the added space to the house. Could use some trim detail but that is just me.
Up here we cut rolls of tarpaper into widths slightly wider than the 2"x width of a joist. We staple the tar paper to the top side of the joists and deck over. Some guys use ice shield too. Deck boards rot out but generally the joists are usable. Do you guys do that as well? When I redid my deck I was able to use about 70% of the joists over.

No, nothing between the joist and boards.

As to the trim, yea, we are going to do some more minor stuff. Like trimming around where the posts come up through the deck with something like 1x2's all around and nice mitered 45's so that mate up nice. Kinda hide where we used the sawzall to notch the boards around the posts.

BUT...we live out in the middle of the country. Perfection and beauty were NOT the goal. Functionality WAS.
