A friend has a garden in my back yard, works in it quite often. The other day she remarked that it would be nice to have a bench to sit on and rest sometimes, so I went on line and found some plans for a basic bench and used them to build it. I used pressure treated southern pine, so it should last a long time. I'm not much of a carpenter, but do have a table saw and miter saw, so those make it pretty easy to cut all the angles needed. It's all screwed together with #10 exterior screws and it good and solid. Must weigh at least 100 lbs. She was really happy when I showed it to her this evening. I'll mow a smal patch under a maple tree next to the garden tomorrow and haul it down there with the BX.
Only had about $80 total in it for materials, a lot cheaper than you could buy anything comparable.

Great looking bench!

My wife is also a gardener and has mentioned a bench several times. I've been looking for ideas, and may use your plans. The quality of the treaded lumber we get around here leaves something to be desired though. Looks shabby and splinters after just a couple of years. I'm thinking of using composite decking instead, for the seat & back.

In any case, nice job on yours! (y)

Very nice design, it looks great.

I was going to do something similar for my wife and mom who spend a lot of time in our vegetable garden. But I kept over planning it and trying to make it fancy. In the end, they gave up on waiting for me and they put two folding chairs under a shade tree with a small 4-foot plastic table to hold their drinks.

Looking good. Now to pick a deep penetrating stain so the bench will remain great for decades.

I have made one out of very hard cedar. Boy was it a chore to cut. Even the stain will not penetrate it well enough. The cedar itself has held up for over 20 years.

The wood bees even ignore it.

Nicely done. More slope on seating area for me. No pic of She?

Great job o the bench. I have heard that there may be some concern about one's skin contacting pressure treated lumber. It could have been a California comment, but a coat of clear sealer might be a good idea. Nice job!

BTW, does she need another bench?

Looks great, but I highly recommend getting some good marine paint put on it if you used YellaWood brand. Im staring at replacing my deck that I built 9 years ago. We maintained it and did everything we could to keep it in good condition, but the rotted deck boards and joists have left me no option but replacement. It’s going to cost at least 3x more than it did in 2016 if I can’t salvage a lot of the framing.

I'd build her anything she wanted! Lovely looking Lady and naturalist.
Yes, she loves the outdoors, spends a few months in the UP on her property. She plants a garden in my back yard, then leaves and goes north.
I do a lot of things for her, I'm her resident handyman.

Yes, she wants me to build another one and take it to the UP for her. Not sure if that's going to happen. I do want to build a small work table for the garden, though.

I found this Old Old garden bench found in the bushes at our property.
My wife said "I want a bench like that one"

two redwood garden benches june 2020.jpg

So I did what any good husband
with too many tools;
and too many other projects,
that I was avoiding.....

I cut down a redwood tree, milled it,
planed the lumber,
and built two benches for her.
