That's really nice. I really like the look of the purlins!!!

Nice work. The skid runners make moving easy.

I cannot weld and looked at building one out of wood, but decided to use a commercial bench from Caldwell. It is portable which can be an advantage.

I came up with another idea to mount a couple of ammo cans to the underside of the seat or top to hold some shooting bags, stapler, gun lube etc. I found a really awesome shooting bag. It's adjustable height and can also be used as a cleaning mat. It looks like it will fit in a 50cal ammo can.

a little google fu will turn up several busted stocks and such from a lead sled.

i know they are as popular as c c creed mmmmmr s but if you want to test for accuracy get a real front rest and a good rear bag.

I can certainly see a lead sled being hard on stocks and the same is always said that they're also hard on scopes, although I don't have firsthand knowledge. I don't know for sure, but I think part of the reason lead sleds might be hard on scopes is because it changes the typical recoil profile the scope was designed for. It's akin to needing to use a "air gun rated scope" on a pellet gun, versus a regular rifle scope.

I built a shooting stand / bench maybe fifteen years ago ... I started with three old square grain bins that I cut up and found enough good wood to build a eight by ten shed, cedar siding and roof also, and fir full size two by sixes on twelve inch spacing..
I built the bench part on one long wall, with two inch two by sixes for laid flat for the bench, and four by fours for the uprights, nothing fancy. I then cut out the wall with for two shooting windows that swung up and became sun shades. The shed is still in use for tool storage now, moved into the yard rather than two hundred yards from a sandy berm ..

Like the design you can:
push it out of the way with the mower so one could cut under it.
move it to other spots with the four wheeler.
my guess is it is lighter than wood
if the price of steel drops like gas I will build one just like it.
thanks for posting

One more photo after I added the ammo cans. I added a 1 1/2" square tube between the front legs and also a short piece of tube as a little spacer on the leg itself to give clearance for the ammo can hinge. I then attached the cans using some self drilling screws I had to both the horizontal tube and the spacer. The cans are nice and secure.

We hauled it to camp and shot with it over the weekend, teaching my buddies 10 YO to shoot a .22LR. It's very stable while still being light and we could drag it by hand for short distance changes or hook it to the truck/ATV for longer distance changes. It's really nice to have the cans with the shooting bags, stapler, targets etc. on board.

One more addition I'll make is to add a wooden gun rest to each side of the top so you can lean your rifles against it and not risk scratching them. Probably just a 2x2 board with some recesses/notches. I'll then declare it the perfect bench!
