Are any of you pulling a bumper pull trailer that is over 20 foot, specifically
24 foot? Am needing something longer than my 20 ft but have not seen
a 24 ft in bumper pull. A 12,000 pound trailer according to the specs on my SRW
F350 will be the max. There's a Big Tex dealer here but their web site shows that a
20 footer is the max for a bumper pull.

thanks for any input you may have.

I know we are talking about apples and oranges here but I bumper pull a 31' tandem, a 33' tri axle, and a 38' tri axle boat trailers with my F-350. These are boat lengths so with the tong of the trailer each is about 4-5 feet longer than that. I have a 15,000# hitch on my truck, the 2.5" tube style. It can be tricky to make the turns especially with a boat trailer due to the axles being located 3/4 of the way back or so. On a equipment trailer it should be a little easier with the axles being located more toward the middle of the trailer.

The pic in my avatar is my F-350, not hitched up, and the 33' boat with a total length of 38' from ball to prop on the boat.

Here is a pic of the the boat and trailer also.

I just got a 24ft dove tail deckover. I love it. In a lot of ways I think it is more forgiving to the hitch which in my case is only a 10,000lb rated one. All of my loads are now held by the trailer axles mostly. I used to put alot of weight on the hitch because an 18ft doesn't give many options to balance a load. My tongue load now is more constant. Truck is always level as is the trailer. And since the trailer has bigger bearings and larger tougher tires I believe it rolls easier offsetting the greater weight. Hitch ratings are somewhat suspect to me anyhow. I've seen SUV's with higher rated hitches than my 3500Express. Besides I can find nothing in Ohio saftety rules that says one can't tow a 14K trailer with a hitch that says 10K.

Here is a photo of my 22ft. PJ that has an empty weight of 3,400 pounds and my JD 3320 with loader that adds another 3,700 to the combo. My "Super Duty" Ford Explorer handles it just fine. Just because the trailer is rated at 14,000 pounds doesn't mean I'd load it that heavy. The longer trailer was great when it came to moving the tractor forwards or backwards to shift tounge weight.

My 2 cents

Looked on the net and found a PJ dealer about 70 miles from here. Pretty amazing for West Texas. Can I ask you how much that PJ ran you?

Called Big Tex--they don't stock 24' trailers but would build one--6 weeks out. 24 foot with rails and 6000 pound axles about 4700 bucks he said.

Don't have a clue what I could sell my 20 foot for.

I had a really nice 18' w/dove tail rub rail on three sides, winch pad, d-rings and very study mesh gates for $2,000. Used trailer market is real strong right now with steel prices what they are.

I paid $3,300 for it brand new in March. It is my understanding that most trailer manufacturers have had several price increases due to steel prices and fuel for shipping. You should still be able to get one for less than under $4,000 and in that style, you could also step up to a 24ft. I love the fold up ramps.

I have a 24' H&H trailer, electric tilt. 8" channel sides, 3" channel iron cross members every 14", 14,000 rating. They can even make longer custom trailers.

Thats an understatement. I bought mine in May. I waited till August to get it because the cost of shipping made it prohibitive to ship. Steel prices went up so much that it was worth 5% more than I paid when I did finally get it.

I stepped up from a 12K 7x18 bobcat style bumper pull to a 14K 8x24 deckover this Spring. OAL went from 24' to 31', Weight from 2K to 3.8K lbs. $3.2K in '02, $4.2K delivered to the farm in Apr. Sold the bobcat in June for $1.8K.

6K axles could have 6 bolt wheels, less availability than 8 bolt wheels.

Deckover has 6' tongue vs 4' on bobcat. Makes tight turns easier as the tongue completely clears dump box, and is needed with the longer trailer wheelbase. Deckheight went from 24" to 33", ball height took a significant jump but did not measure, I just went to a trailer parts & steel dealer and ended up with a 20K ball mount and a riser type 30K 2 5/16 ball to get the ride height.

My biggest problem with the bobcat was exposed fenders and un-noticed damage causing tire blowouts down the road. The inner tire sidewall would rub against the fender. Ka-boom & $100 replacement.

Really liked the look of that Road Warrior.

GN probably better, but seems my pickup bed is always full of whatever--tools, building material, tools, trash, herbicide whatever. And probably a little foolishly, I like a plastic bed liner which I have and can't have that with the 5th wheel. So hoping to stay with a BP if possible. May be cheaper to buy two rear blades and leave one at each place.

A potential problem with a long bumper pull is hitch weight. Many manufacturers use the 60%/40% rule when placing the axle centerline. this works great with smaller dual axle car haulers, but it tends to place too much weight on the front of longer heavier trailers. Especially when we have to load the tractor far forward so that long bush hog will clear the rear ramps. Anything 20 foot or longer, I would want those axles moved forward a little (8 or 9 inches?). This helps prevent overloading the hitching parts, and still provide a good front heavy balance to prevent sway. Even our 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are often originally equipped with 10K/1K hitching components. A tractor on a long trailer can easily produce a couple times that 1,000 pounds limit. Not a safe configuration at all.

You are right Crash. So far all my loads have been short enough to keep the tongue load just right. With 20' on the flat I could easily roll a vehicle far enough forward to put over 2000lbs on the hitch. I can see some items left back on the dove to compensate. Right now if I pull a car on and leave the back tire at the back of the flat its just right. Haven't backed anything on yet to see how that looks. The 10% tongue weight recommended doesn't quite work when the loads are 10K or better and it appears its not necessary on the longer trailers either. If I maintain about 500-700lbs on my new trailer that seems perfect regardless of whats on the axles.

I also bought a 20ft.(bumper pull) PJ trailer back in march for $3,300 and love it.The guy I bought it from told me there was going to be a 5% increase in april.coobie

Picked up my 5325 yesterday. I know I was approaching max load, but don't intend to trailer this tractor much. At any rate, it worked out really well. My F350 stayed about level with a little noticable push at the hitch. Was steady on the road and trailer did not whip.
The Bush Hog rear blade I looked at adds 10 feet. Not sure if even a 24 footer would do it. I am thinking GN for sure if I upgrade. Don't think I want to go to the expense to try and trailer this entire rig set up.

thanks for all of your comments.
