I'm getting tired of needing to borrow friends trailers everytime I turn around because my 16' utility trailer is useless for just about everything I do now. So I've been considering replacing it with a 20' or 24' deck over with 102" deck. I am familiar with pj trailer brand and like their monster ramp option so I can still have a flat deck for hauling hay. I would love to go to a gooseneck but that isn't an option as I have a cap on my truck and need to keep it on so bumper pull is the only option. Truck is a 2006 f-350 crew cab dually with 6.0. But I'm not sure if I did enough research or thought everything through properly. I've been told by a friend that dot is more willing to pull this type of trailer over because it is easy to overload the hitch/tow rating. Main things I'm towing are hay, small square and round bales, occasionally a tractor, mini excavator and building materials. Does anyone have experience with this style trailer? Any thoughts or advice? Options that I can't forget?

My first trailer was a 20' bumper pull and it always seemed if I needed to load it heavy that I had to be particular as to how I loaded it to get it to pull good, my next and current trailer is a 25+5 gooseneck and I can load it almost anyway I want to and it pulls good, to me there is no comparison, but in your situation you can make a bumper pull work, but I would get at least a 24' and I would have my axles set a little farther forward than what is standard. Good luck.

I have owned a bumper pull(not a deck over) PJ 20 ft (14,000 lbs)for the last 5-6 years and it has been a great trailer.I did replace the cheap china made E-rated tires it came with last year with Maxxis e-rated tires.Other than that been very happy with it..

With your truck you'll be fine with that size trailer. I posted a while ago about the GN vs. bumper pull to tow with a '99 f350, and I found out that I could actually tow more weight with a bumper pull legally. This was because the additional weight of the gooseneck took away from capacity, plus I couldn't use the bed for another implement. Of course your newer truck will likely have an greater tow rating so that might not be the case, but regardless, a 24' will be fine.

The longer length is easier to balance the load as well, but it's not as imperitive with a 1 ton as it is with a half ton anyways.

A friend of mine pulls exactly the same trailer with a very similar truck and has never had an issue no matter what he loads on it..You'll be fine in my opinion.

Keep in mind that for a 14k trailer, the weight of the trailer is going to go up alot with the length. My buddy has a PJ 20+4 14k trailer that I pull with my 3/4t and its a heavy trailer. For your dually I don't think it will be an issue except possibly the tongue weight on certain loads that are difficult to adjust. I would try it and if you aren't happy with it a w/d hitch would be my next move. Make sure your factory hitch is rated properly.

I have owned many trailers in my long lifetime, but this is the one multi-use that I like the best. I use it for all the things that you mentioned, plus more.

You can get it as a bumper pull. I ordered the gooseneck version 10 years ago, with a metal deck, LED lights, the receiver hitch and rear trailer light plug.

It is a Delta 102"x22' total length. I ordered the 4' pop up dovetail, because a 5' dovetail drug on the uneven ground in the hayfield.

I'm concerned that the metal deck would not be safe in our winters but other than that I like that setup

I have a 20' deck-over bumper pull, I have 5 other trailers for other uses. I got the deck-over so I could have a trailer I could load and unload with my forklift and haul my loader tractor. It does a great job, it is 14900 gvwr, I installed a B&W 16000# hitch. I wanted to retain my camper shell for the enclosed capability. I have not had weight and balance issues, just use some sense. You can also buy a tongue scale if needed.

I have a 21k triple axle 20' deck over with a pintle hitch. I bought it to pull a backhoe behind a dump truck but I often pull it with my dually hauling other things. Really handy trailer. It is so much easier to hook up than a gooseneck and the deckover sure is nice for loading and unloading things with forks. Mine has a dovetail and ramps which are great but it is still a tall trailer and is kind of scary loading my tracked skid steer on it. I need to take some time and weld some more tie downs on it. Mine doesn't have a rub rail and only has four d rings so it is a bit of a pain securing things on it.
