I could never get more than a year out of a 55 gal drum burn barrel before it rusted to pieces. Out of frustration, I cut the top off a 120 gal propane tank. That was over 20 years ago and I'm still burning trash in it today.
If you attempt this, DO IT SAFELY!! I removed the valve and filled the tank with water. I drilled 4 half inch holes and used a cordless Sawzall to make the cut. It took awhile to torch vent holes in the 3/16" thick steel sides. I thought about cutting slots as mentioned above to create the vortex effect but the holes seem to work ok.
The tank works very well as a burn barrel since it has a raised pedestal which keeps the hot metal from igniting dried grass.
