Burn Barrel

Our local government has realized that if you charge dump fees in a rural area than some people will just dump their garbage anywhere. So the cost of running recycling and the dump is in the tax rate and we do not get charged to use the dump. Some people would call this free.

Everything free to dump/recycle in my county in Maryland with proof of residency and non-commercial. Appliances, paint, oil, paper, stumps, oyster shells, etc. Only thing I've run into is they won't allow dump trucks or dump trailers, so I can only get rid of stumps that are small enough to roll off the truck/trailer by hand.

If I don't have to shell out my hard earned pennies when I go to the dump, then indeed it is 'free'.
Ya, I know it is included in the tax rate, but at $900.oo/year for taxes on 5 acres I think I am getting off lucky.

I'm sure this thread sound pretty silly, but I'm looking for a good design for our burn barrel. I just pick up a good 20 ga. open top barrel to replace my umpteenth burn barrel and would really like it to last longer. It seems regular 22 ga or 24 ga barrels are good for about 2 years max.

If you have any suggestions on burn barrels, I'd appreciate learning about them.

Actually I fudged a little claiming population of 481. I live well outside of town, but closer to Warm Springs than any other town.

Those 'city folks', as you guessed, can not have a burn barrel. That as well as mail delivery, full time fire department, and a host of services most other cities normally provide. Some of the fire departments in this county don't even have a water supply (which includes water for the fire trucks, not even a toilet.). Next closest town to WS has a population of 6.

All-in-all though it's a great place to live, as long as one doesn't need to work for a living. A traffic jam in WS is when there are 3 cars at "the" signal light

We dump for free here. Metal items, cardboard, glass, paper, lumber and styrofoam all free.
Fridges, Stoves and freezers you have to pay for. As well as mattresses,couches, chairs and tables.

Same here except for styrofoam I think. I need to double check that now that you mention it. I hate the volume it takes in the trash can!

A friend of ours made us a small burn barrel out of a old well tank. He cut a really nice design into it with a plasma cutter as well. I don't know how long it will last but it is nice to have and a nice gesture from him to us.

Got lucky as I found a 45 gal barrel that I had forgotten I had hidden away.
Cut the top off and there is no rust, next is to bore out the breather holes.
I like 3 at bottom and 3 more about 1/3 high staggered from the bottom ones.
I use a 1 1/2 core drill for those which makes a vert neat looking burn barrel.
I will paint the outside with black hi temp stove paint hoping to extend the life as well as having a good looking 'tool'.

I followed your air vent layout on my 55 gal barrel. Set it on a square of walkway grate to keep it off the ground. I'll be hoping for a couple of years out of this one. Meantime, I'll keep my eye out for a short section of 36" pipe, or something similar like the SS wash tub.

100% Stainless burn barrel from burnrightproducts.

It's actually an incinerator and burns so hot that there's no smoke once it reaches temperature within a few minutes. Also just leaves ashes due to maximum inceneration. Reaches 1800 degrees. The air vents are what makes it work.

I love mine. Lasts for many years.

I have no idea about what our burn barrel laws are here.............but I don't suspect there are any. We get burn bans and warnings depending on weather conditions periodically and you have to have a permit to do any actual land burning. I've burnt some large brush piles before. Never had an issue but can see the potential for problems and I just don't do it anymore. But, I do burn paper and card board trash every weekend on the ground. It makes a mess. Have been looking for a burn barrel but someone above mentioned an old wood stove. I have one just sitting out in the woods. I think I will definitely set it up for burning trash!

The laws even here that govern aspects of rural living are oppressive in my opinion. But it sounds like I'm very very lucky to live where I do compared to some of you other guys. Living in a "backwards" state has its advantages.

I look at it with the opposite view... I live in a State that treats me as an adult.

I don't need to have every aspect of my life regulated by other people, from the Big Smoke (city) or Green Party, making laws to justify their own existence.

That's kind of my point. By U.S. standards states like South Carolina are considered backwards and backwoods partly because our government does not seek to control every aspect of my life and can't exactly afford to. It is more intrusive than I want it to be and getting worse every day, but again, pretty hands off compared to the west coast and north east.

Made several out 250 old oil drum, think it's 14 ga. I cut two big holes out on the narrow side, used the cut out pieces for covers. mounted it on runners so I could get tractor folks under it, when full of burt trash take it down back to empty it. It last around 5 years, depends on how much nuclear radioactive wastes I incinerate in it.

I'm going to try to get the old wood stove out of the woods with my tractor this weekend but I will be by myself so it might be tough. My only concern about using an old wood stove to burn trash is where to put it. Can't move it easily like I could a burn barrel. I want it close enough to be easy to access but it will be a bit unsightly so don't want it right next to the cabin. Also not sure how much trouble it will be to load and clean out but I'd guess it will reduce stuff pretty efficiently.

I used to work for the DEQ Air Quality Division. We got a request from a farmer to do a controlled burn, which was acceptable under the regs at the time. He got permission; only thing, there just "happened" to be a cache of old automobile tires in the mix. You could see the black column of smoke for 30 miles.
