( However, it is hard for me to believe that someone could burn a house down and not attract some sort of friction. )

There WAS friction alright. NOT legal friction, but friction with a couple neighbors that got smoked out of THEIR houses for a day or so. I was simple astounded that someone could simply light up an old house and not have the fire dept. on stand-by. Guess I aughtta mention, the guy who burt the house is the Mayors father. I might not get away with the same thing. (No plans to TRY either)

Field fires are a standard practice near where I live.
Is it legal??????

Never been caught yet, does that count?

I'm about 3/4 of a mile over the city/ county line so I can burn. We're supposed to call for a verbal permit, and most people do. My neighbor OTOH, just lights it off when he thinks the pile is big enough to sustain the fire, usually about every couple of months........he has water available on his property but I don't, so I wait till winter, or like now where it's raining every other day........

The state (WA) has gotten serious about it here. Two years ago they even ran advertisments the paper and TV asking people to fink off anyone they saw using a burn barrel. I had to quit it at that point as I am right one the highway. I still do a burn or two every year but only for tree prunings, etc. and expect to get called on it one of these times. Oddly, I could burn such stuff legally in a pile but not in the barrel.

We do have general burn bans at times depending on the weather and ag burning almost always requires a permit. I burn my brush piles from wood cutting every winter when snow is on the ground and, although not required, always call dispatch and tell them where, what and about how long and tell them not to respond unless -I- call them.

What's their beef with a barrel? Makes for a hotter fire, more control, and fewer ashes. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Supposedly people are more likely to burn garbage in a barrel. It's tougher to burn on the ground I guess. Rather than go after people for burning garbage, they go after the barrel. Kinda like outlawing guns to stop murders.

I believe a barrel is much safer for things like cardboard since you can set grates on top to keep the floaters down. We always had one as a kid growing up.

We have burn ban during the Summer dry season. The burning restrictions will start to tighten up in May. Depending what type of burning we have to get a permit from either Fire department or Forestry Services. We did some slash burning last week. The Forestry Service officer came out to inspect the site and equipment and issued a written burn permit.

Ya have to look at from the enforcement standpoint I guess.

Burn barrel bad. Stuff in it, have to make a decision. Much easier just to issue the 'burn barrel ticket' than have to decide.

Look at it from the eforcer's standpoint. A burn barrel is bad so ticket it. If I had to look in to see what is burning that would require me to make a decision. Much easier both for the enforcer and the judge to just issue the barrel ticket.
