Anybody have any tips that would help when burning out stumps. These stumps are large and would take a dozer to dig out and they are in a place that would make the damage done by a dozer not worth getting rid of the stumps.

Auger/drill a bunch of holes in them and maybe pour some kerosene in the holes, give it time to soak in good. Pile brush on top and get a good fire going all day long. Might take more than one burning.....I have had fair results with this method.

My uncle drilled holes in some of his and poured something inside the hole (forget what it was). As I recall, he said it would either hasten the deterioration from the inside... or that it was flammable and he was going to ignite it a day later and let the stump smolder underground.

For some reason, now that I type it out, I think it was more of the latter (smoldering) than rotting.

Perhaps he was going to soak with kerosene?

Anyways, that's all I know in it... I ended up popping them out with my backhoe and he never did it.

If I remember correctly it is saltpeter that you pour into the holes to hasten decay but I've never tried it. When I burn them I have a problem with the stump's fire suffocating under it's own ashes.

I bought a piece of 4' metal culvert 4' long, they use them as drywells buried and filled with rock. Set that puppy over a stump and build a good fire in it and it will cook a stump pronto and contain the fire so you won't burn the countryside. Works great.

I have used "Stump-Out" in the past. You need to add kerosine, but it does work well.

Small walk behind stump grinders work great. Very little turf damage and they grind the stump into mulch. Then all you have to do is dig out a little of the chips and add soil, and your ready to grass over the stump....

We have had good results with setting a piece of tin around the stump and spreading a few bags of charcol over the stump and set it on fire. It will usually smolder for two or three days and anything that is left is easily removed. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Someone once told me copper sulfate was the stuff to pour in them.
