Burning trash

I'm sure there are technical reasons that may or may not be surmountable but I've always wondered why they couldn't burn garbage with the coal or natural gas they burn in power plants.

We have a trash burner in the city of Claremont, NH.

It is a trash to energy plant so the burners run a turbine and it is tied into the power grid.
Because they are an alternative energy source, they are allowed to charge a much higher wholesale rate for there electricity and that cost gets passed on to the consumer. We are on the Vermont boarder and our power used to be come from a Vermont based utility. Needless to say the PUC from Vermont didn't care about NH , and the Vermont company formed a corporation in NH for there customers just over the line. The end result, we where forced to buy all this high priced electricity and for many years we had the highest electric rates in the 48 continental United states.

It put a lot of industry out business and others moved because of the high energy cost.

We are not allowed to burn in Claremont , and have been told a number of times that the pollutants from one home burn barrel are many times greater then from the incinerator with all its scubbers and pollution equipment .

They can, and there are many variaions of that theme. Around here the cement plants are/were burning old solvents and such in the kilns, which are high temp for a long time, and give pretty complete burning. BUT - no matter how good a job you do combusting and breaking down the complex molecules, you never get them all, and the heavy metals do not break down. So effectively you are importing toxins to the area of the incinerator and pumping them out in the direction of the prevailing winds, day after day.

Not to mention the emissions control equipment associated with the boilers. Its complex as heck the design and operation of a power plant, and the operation of these power generating plants. There are lots of technical reasons as you stated and design issues.
I imagine it would be easier to build a new plant.

bgott,
We had a trash burning power plant here in town for many years. The technology to separate the unburnables, shred the rest and burn with coal was enormous. None of the equipment worked the way it should have. A lot of breakdowns. Explosions in the shredder stations due to propane tanks, gas cans, etc.
The costs to keep the emissions under control were too great to keep the cost of electricity down to an affordable level.
It turned into a CASH burning power plant and was eventually shut down. It has sat empty for many years, but the city still gets pollution credits from the EPA for NOT releasing toxins. They are then sold to an energy giant for use at their plants, so they can legally release more than they are supossed to. The plant is scheduled to be demolished next year and sold as scrap.

We have burned our trash for years. The county has a rubbish dump and a house hold trash transfer station with 3 100 haul trailers to move trash to the district landfill. They charge6 to 8 dollars a cubic yard container no mater what amoun is in it. they have a rural pick up route once a week but for folks like us that generate loads of feed bags an other paper scraps burning is the only affordable way. We burn wood and paper and somtines a few odd chunks of syrofoam and plastic. Most metals here get recycled in one form or another.

When our neighbor got turned in, it was for doing similar to what you describe. It is well within reason for you to discuss this with the local FD and Air Resources. Our neighbor did not get nailed by the Fire Dept, he got nailed by Air Resources Board, although the FD could have taken care of it too. He's on like a two year probation on burning now.

I had annonymously left a flyer for them, available from the FD, which tells what can be burned here, but it was ignored. I still am not sure who, but another neighbor finally turned him in while a particularily stinky burn pile was going.

He had come from Minnesota, where he burned everything on his old property. Whether or not Minn' had regulations on burnable stuff, I do not know.

sry, can't hold my tongue on this one. When the government offers a service for "free /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" , it's only free for the people who don't pay taxes. The rest of us end up paying more for the service that is offered for "free /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" than we would if we payed a private company to supply the service.
The government has no competition when they offer a service like that and competition is one thing that keeps prices in check.

Ours dumpster service is run by local gov. Revenues come from sales tax. If someone isn't paying sales tax, they're not buying anything and therefore, I reckon they don't have much trash. At least it's tangible. I like seeing results for my taxes
