Thank you all. I knew this was the place to ask. I do work safely and cover up. I have been a Safety Officer and was at one time a member of the Institute of Risk Management (part of my job) so automatically "think safe". I am confident there was no flash burn because I was never facing the point where I was welding, neither was I close enough to feel heat. I know that closed eyes is not a protection that is why I turned away - and still screwed my eyes up! It was the UV I was unsure of and this was no doubt part of the cause. The dust from the other jobs later in the day (combined with sweat running down my face and into my eyes) certainly cannot have helped. All OK now.
