rlee6 does the front have to be so deep in the ground too, in bama the front of mine has to be 2' deep and 4" thick by how every wide the pipe is (add 2' to each side of the pipe), it really wasn't that hard to build after you get the chert on top of the pipe, you just build a form at the angle you need. I know it don't, but hope this helps some. Robert

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( Bill,

Two years ago when I put my culvert in on a State Hwy, I used pre-cast concrete ends that just happened to be lying on my land when I bought it. Two of them with 24 inch centers as a matter of fact.

I thought I'd really gotten lucky until I had it all together and was covering it in dirt.

That's when they stoped by again and told me they are no longer allowing concrete ends on culverts. Too much liability if somebody comes off the road and hits them. The only thing that's allowed are just the metal sloped ends. Which I didn't have and had to go buy.

Nothing more is allowed on them, just put them in and grad the dirt to match. Of course, that's in my area and I have no idea if it's like this in all of Texas or not.

Of course, now I know why I had those pre-cast concrete ends lying around. They are worthless. I put them at the bottom of a deep hole, burried with a pasture over them now.

When you miter the ends of the culvert pipes and you have backed filled over your culverts. Dig down along the angle your pipes around 4 to 6 inches. We use 1 x 4 yellow pine or 1 x 6's depending on how deep we need to go. Build a rectangle type form usually a foot wider than each side of the culvert and a little longer than your angle. Than level your form off of the angle of the culvertso that will be your inside of the form. I usually make a bottom form and dig out under the culvert and pour a flat pad flush with bottom of the culvert to keep it from washing out underneath it.

Thanks for the replies. A few followup questions:
1) The concrete pad is 3" thick and has to be round at corners. Do you use a roofing felt to make the corners round?

2) Pad slopes 1 to 4. Do I need an extra thick concrete mix?

Thanks.

I occasionally drive Hwy 49 and 43 through Marion and Harrison Counties on my way to the TSC store in Marshall. Along those two highways the TDOT is removing EVERY culvert and replacing them with the sloped concrete version. This is a huge project that must be costing 100's of thousands of dollars.

jrepp,

Isn't that the most annoying thing. One area makes you remove something, but the same organization is installing them in a different area. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

The more I see TxDot operate, the more I think they do things just to spend the money they have in their budget so they can get more money the following year.

"Expand the project at hand to fill the time/money allowed".

I added 110' of 15'' Culvert to my 40' driveway culvert last Summer. All I had to get was a free permit from the state.
Once I got the permit I simply installed the culvert and covered it up.
No inspections were required after getting the permit.
