My wife and I are trying to close on a new home, and I had a question for everyone. The home has an existing propane tank (above ground) which I feel is an eyesore. Can you bury these existing tanks, or do you have to purchase one of the new underground tanks to do so? Is this a costly project to undertake?

depends on how big a tractor and how many implements you need to buy to do the job. :D

UG propane tanks are rated for burial. Above ground tanks are not. Look up the underground tanks, they have a number of different features. I suspect if you did bury your tank the supplier would refuse to fill it. Can you paint it to minimize the impact. I have three tanks, all are painted dark forest green and disappear into my wooded property.

Spend the money and BURY it. I did and can tell you that you won't regret it.

I agree that a buried tank would be best- but would need to be the right kind. If your current tank is rented, make sure to check with your provider- I asked and was told no, you can not paint it.

As an engineer, I have to disagree strongly.

A burried tank can be neither inspected nor maintained. Many gas stations have paid an enormous price for the government regulation which forced them to burry their tanks.

Even if a tank has been designed for burrial, it will not have infinite life and will eventually become a hazard.

I would build a fence which creates a visual screen without blocking all ventillation, and then landscape around the tank.

This tank was not placed in a location that made it suitable for hiding at all. In fact w/ it in it's current location I will not be able to build the back deck that I would like to on this house because it would interfere w/ the layout. Does anyone know the price of simply relocating the tank? Are there restrictions on distance or proximity to the house or to land lot lines. We don't plan to stay in the home more than 5 years or so. We just want to live there until at which time I can afford to build the house I want to on the 35 acres we bought when we got married.

I have 4-1000 gallon tanks that are about 50 feet from building. Then the lines are T'ed and run about 300 feet. They work fine, but I don't know about any of the other questions.

Another option if you can move it is to plant "around" it. In the pic is an above ground LP tank. See where it is? (hint, almost dead center of the picture, little to the left).

Most propane tanks are rented from the company that fills them. I would start with a call to them, they should know the local codes. The tank can be moved quite a ways from the home. You then use a high pressure regulator at the tank, run high pressure underground to the house with a low pressure regulator at the house. Using high pressure, you can avoid a huge underground line. Tanks are normally painted silver or a light color to keep them from overheating in the sun and blowing off the relief valve. But, once away from the home you can use fences or shrubs to hide the tank. Good luck, Richard
