BUSH HOG® 305 Rotary Cutter

I was looking at this Bush Hog 305 Rotary Cutter. It is a heavy duty 5 ft. Rotary Mower. I am going to be using this on a Kubota B2910. I am looking for something that can take abuse and cut some thick stuff. Has anybody used this bushhog or heard anything about it. I am checking with my dealer on a price but he hasn't gotten back with me. I will let you know when I find out. Let me know anything you can about this. That Bush Hog is an excellent unit! It should last you, your grandkids and their kids for a long time… /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The only thing I don’t care for is the standard A-frame they use (it will bend/twist over long term use)… you can upgrade to an optional hefty A-frame, but I believe is only offered in Cat II and Cat 3… don’t think it’s available for Cat I… you will also pay a premium for the Bush Hog name… (I’m guessing ~~$2k for the 60” unit) (also over 800 lbs. of steel hanging off the back)

There is only one other 5’ rotary cutter that’s in this class (that I’m aware of)

I have a 286. 6'
The rating is ~3" on this medium duty unit.
But you would be hard pressed to reach that max. IMHO.
I have cut some very rough stuff without any problems. In some cases I needed to use the loader to smash the stuff down so I could drive over it or better yet back over the big stuff. In some cases 2-3" diameter, 10+ feet tall.
Great machines. They are quite heavy though.

Keep it clean and keep it covered and it will last along time.

Midwest has a cutter (30 series) that is not quite as heavy duty as the Bush Hog but darn close. And a H*** of a lot less expensive. Have you seen one, JMIII?

Isn't the Bush hog a bit heavy for his machine?

It cuts 6" stuff. 5' Rhino Cutters
The heaviest cutter bar none is the Rhino-"Lumber Jack" Rhino also has the CY60 and TW72.

Yes, absolutely Won't work... I missed his mention of "tractor model" being used...

22 PTO won't cut it... you need sustained torque to run these heavy duty cutters... this Kubota "B" would have difficulty running a medium duty cutter much less a heavy duty one (combined with the excessive weight factor hanging off the 3-pt hitch)...

I would stick with a "standard" duty cutter and perhaps even consider 4' vs. 5' for optimum performance from a B2910 for brush cutting purposes...

I talked to my dealer this morning and he told me the same thing. When I saw 30 horsepower I thought tractor horsepower. But of course it was PTO Horsepower. That B2910 gives 22. He said that he sells a lot of the Bush Hog SQ-48. Which is a 4ft cut. He says that they say that it will cut up to 1 inch diameter but he has seen them cut 3 inch stuff. That would be a much better bush hog for that tractor. The price I got was for trading a 6ft Befco Finish Mower in on it that is 8 years old. The mower isn't in bad shape but it has some surface rust from where I was careless and left grass lay on it (Won't make that mistake again). He said that he could do it for $590.00 difference. I am going to have to work with that. What do you think?

Well… it’s your money… but if it were mine…

I’d buy a proven brand new KingKutter 4’ rotary cutter or equivalent for ~~ $500-550. total cost… and keep the Befco 6’ finish mower for mowing grass (as you already said it’s still in workable/good condition)… therefore, I would cancel the 5’ new finish mower order and pocket the savings for something else down the road…

I’d be happy with the new Kubota tractor and continue to use “usable” implements that you already own and that are bought and paid for… remember you won’t tell one iota bit of difference of the grass cut between new or used… the only difference will be extra money left in your bank account to use elsewhere… /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The 6ft Befco is to big for my yard. I just moved and that is why I am trading the L2900 for the B2910. My yard has a lot of trees to get around and in between and I can just make it with a 5ft. Otherwise I would keep the 6ft.
