I am purchasing a Bush Hog model 285 rotary cutter in the morning. It will be going on my 98' 231 Massey Ferguson. My tractor has 38 engine hp and 34 pto hp. I think it will handle it just fine. (any opinions/ suggestions?)

Anyway, I just wanted to get a final price check here on TBN. And I must tell you that I will be paying cash (meaning the price is usually lower if its a cash deal).

Thanks,
Travis R

Well to be honest, I'd rather get some prices on here of what people "think" it should cost, and/or what the going price is on a cash deal Before I post what I am paying for it tomorrow. The deal is done. I just gotta pay for it and pick it up in the morning.

Are you gonna back out if people say it's worth less than your planning to pay?:p

I think I'm getting a real good deal. I would just like to know "how good" it is.

I'm interested in this because I might be buying a new tractor and want to see what price I can get it for with the tractor and he had these on the lot.

Two years ago I priced a 286 for 1,900.00 without safety chains, with safety chains was 2,200.00. I would guess a 285 would be around 1,600.00 to 1,800.00. These are Atlanta area prices. My local JD dealer had several sitting out front. I can call him when he opens this morning if that would help.

The 280 series of Bush Hogs are excellent cutters.

I got it!
Has front deflector, but does not have one on the rear. Thats not a problem because I would have taken the rear one off anyway. It has the "Comer Industries" pto driveline and that was the one I was hoping was coming with it. I gave $1750 cash for it, loaded on my trailer, no tax.

Anyway, it seems to be Extremely well built. I will post back in the future of how it performs. I looked on the gearbox and saw something that I didn't like. The tag said "made in China". So that tells me that the gearbox, or some of its components are manufactured in China. I sure hope it holds up. ARE ALL BUSH HOG GEAR BOXES, OR GEARBOX COMPONENTS NOW MADE IN CHINA? HAVE THEY ALWAYS BEEN MADE THERE OR HAVE THEY JUST STARTED?

I appreciate the replies ya'll have given me.

Thanks,

Kinda late getting in on this'n. Spent the last 3 days mowing and haven't even turned the computer on.....

That sounds like a good price w/front shield. In line with prices of 1-1/2 to 2 years ago....

If you look CLOSELY, just about every major (and "minor") brand is now using Chinese gearbox's on single spindle mowers. I've got 3 that have seen 2-1/2 years of extreme duty and haven't been any trouble whatsoever.

FWJ,

Yeah I thought that was a good price also. I don't think mine will ever see "extreme" duty mowing as far as cutting the big stuff. The gearbox has the "Bush Hog" name engraved on the casting, but it does not have the "charging hog" anywhere on it like my Squealer had.

I sold my 07' Squealer SQ600 (shearpin model) for $850 to a long time friend of the family. I had been wanting to upgrade to a heavier mower before he was in the market for a 5' cutter. It happened all-of-a-sudden because I wasn't even advertising or trying to sell my Squealer! I realized that I only had to come out of pocket $900 to get a $2000 cutter. I feel that I made a smart move, and so did my friend. He was looking at the King Kutter brand, which is good for the money, but I convinced him that my used Bush Hog was better built, but I really didn't have to do much convincing. He could see for himself.

I thought that the Bush Hog 280 series was no longer in production. But this is not true. I think at one time they did quit making them, but they are back in production now- thats for sure.
