Bush Hog gear box oil change

I heard years back from a oil distributer that petroleum gear lubes protect against rust and oxidation better than synthetic lubes. Yes, the synthetic oils are great for very hot or cold conditions, for some farm equipment, I still want the protection against R/O that petroleum oil gives. Not all synthetic oils have all the R/O additives so look for them if you think there might be moisture.

I never really change mine as it leaks out at about a quart every two to three weeks so it is always fresh. We have to top it off every time we use it. We are now trying 00 grease so we will see how long that stays in there

I like the every couple of decades answer. Check it for leaks and keep oil (or grease) in the gear box and it will outlast the frame by many years. Likely you could build another deck for it and use the gear box for another couple decades without ever changing the oil in it.

Keeping a lubricant in the gear box is much more important than changing the oil. Look underneath for signs of oil leak every time you hook up, and check the level at least yearly.
