Factor in your time and fuel. I made a 10 hour round trip when I bought my Bush Hog 297, but the price and condition made it worth it.

Zebra, I remember seeing that pic a few times on here, that's a nice setup with your tractor!

I guess my question would be....are you really wanting a pull-type??? Or is this just a compromise because you cannot find a good used HD 6' 3PH type???

Too bad you arent any closer to me. Their is a 306 3PH type on c-list for $600 right now. (and now its not mine:laughing:) but it looks pretty good though.

Ld,
Your right about not being able to find a good used 3 pt type. I would prefer the 3 pt type for tighter woods mowing that I do but was thinking a HD 3pt type might be a bit much for my tractor. However, I guess you prove me wrong there by using it with your 3400.
I was actually thinking I could convert this to a 3 pt style if it didn't work out.

I'd really love to find a nice condition mower like Zebras in good shape. Something like a 306/296 but it seems like I'm missing all the good deals. My budget right now is under a grand and I haven't come across one yet (that aren't already sold)

Converting to 3PH is always an option if you are handy with a welder. But I would re-configure teh tailwheels. Those for being pull-type add alot of extra weight back their. Your tractor being about 600-700# heavier and a good bit more power......I wouldnt hesitate at all to run a 306 behind it. Weight is my only issue with the one I have. Leaving the FEL on is a must.

IF you do decide to proceed with this cutter, just check out the gearbox real good (stump jumper pan for wobble), and check the u-joints. About everything else that could possibly go wrong can be fixed with either a welder or paint:thumbsup:

I "assume" you saw my thread, but if not...here http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/attachments/220111-bushhog-306-fresh-painting.html

As you can see, as long as the gearbox and PTO are good, it dont take much $$$ to turn a seemingly POS into a nice unit.

You also need the tail wheels to swivel, not just trail when converting a pull type to 3pt.
