Re: Bush Hog Use on (2-4\") trees How do you do it?

First, I think 4" is getting outside what you want to mow.. unless you really hate your tractor and mower...

For that matter 3" is pushing it for reality purposes.. 2" saplings are the norm' for 'big stuff'. Generally refered to in this way, the young tree has not had a change to get woody.. but is still green and pliable... Some heavy green brush and soft trees fall into chis category.. like bananna trees, and some low to the ground palm, and similar.. like hammock type areas....

As for pushing it over... that would be the thing powering the hog.. i.e. .. your tractor... rule of thumb is if you can drive over it.. you can cut it.. that said... My NH 1920 tractor gets enough abuse that I don't intend to introduce it too as it is... so I don't go looking for 2-3" trees to run over... If it is down and needs to be flattened and chopped a bit.. sure.

Guess it is one of those common sense and judgement call things... Guess it also depends if it is your tractor, or you are driving the 'counties maintenance tractor' as to what it physically is capable of cutting....

Re: Bush Hog Use on (2-4\") trees How do you do it?

Would it not be easier to chainsaw the larger stuff and come back later and "mulch" the tops with the bush hog? I've never used one but I've cleared a pile of brush in my day.

The worst stuff for me to clear is the up to 1" stuff as I don't like brush saws and the chainsaw whips it around too much.

Most of the brush here is alders about and cherry with black knot rot, both up to 4" or so.

Like others have said.. I use the FEL w/ a toothbar.. for me it's the easiet way.. let the tractor do the work for you. Last Saturday I got a flat tire(rear) while just driving along the side of a field.. luckily I was able to get it back to the barn. Went back to look at what could have caused it.. all I saw were a few branches & sticks.. the puncture hole was pretty big.. guess I just ran over one the wrong way. The rears are liquid filled.. had to have a tube put in it.

Yeah.. bg stuf is easier to chainsaw.. And I agree.. I don't like small material in a chainsaw. 1" and 1.5" stuff I don't even blink.. just mow it right over.

Re: Bush Hog Use on (2-4\") trees How do you do it?

Cutting and clearing has always been something in my mind.
For some reason, I never really measured what I cut by hand verses what gets mulched by my 'hog.

This is three inches --- put your fingers to the screen ----

Start---1----------2-----------3
___________________________

That is pretty wide now isn't it. So don't go cutting THAT .

This is the real deal...
Start--1------1.5
_____________

This is your two to three inch sapling. We are measuring diameter, make like an OK sign with your fingers.

Now depending on your equipment, time of year, health of growth even 1.5 may be pushing it.

But when I do get my 'bota and Woods BrushHog 72 inches out, I usually back into stuff...... very, very, slowly.

You must have your screen set to a different resolution than mine. That "3 inches" is only 2 and 11/16" on mine. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
