I'm new to land ownership. My Friends tell me you
can't use a Jeep with a motorized bush hog. They don't
have any reasons though. I have 14 acres to bush hog and
it seems faster and cheaper to use an old Jeep with motorized bush hog. I think you guys can give me pro's and con's. Any Input appreciated.
Thanks

Robert

Theres certainly no reason you couldnt. Theres a guy down the road from me who mows his yard w/ an old Nissan 4x4 P/U dragging a huge motorized reel mower. It seems to work well and its fairly quick. If you go the Jeep route you'll likely be the talk of the town. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Once upon a time I had a 200 hp cab Jeep myself, don't see why you couldn't, although keeping the ground speed down will be important, most " tractor" work is around 5mph or less. Visibility will be an issue, and if your using your brush hog get the front guard, you or your back window will be more in line with the debris ejection level. Your not going to have the traction that a tractor has. It can be done just not conventional. I used to pull a 12' harrow with a CJ5 a 65 with 5:1 rears and a v8 with ps, heat, am/fm all the options /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I would think it would also be nice if you had a remote shut off for the mower, just in case. Just be thinking safety if you can't do it safely hire it out, makin money is easier than makin body parts.

Thanks for showing that I'm not the only one with the idea.

Actually, Willys first touted the Jeep as an agricultural vehicle after WW II and made a bunch of attachments for it such as plows.
Living History Farm has a picture of a Jeep pulling a farm implement and says "Among the farm uses demonstrated were: plowing; disking; drilling grain; shelling and grinding grain; threshing wheat; elevating grain into bin; pulling pick-up baler and hay wagon; spray painting buildings; digging post holes; and crop spraying." All for the ceiling price of "$1,090, f.o.b. Toledo."

BTW, that price included a PTO.

Wow, all that with a Jeep, and I was happy to just get
field cut!
I don't feel so crazy anymore.
Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Last summer I saw a guy bush hogging a field with an old Jeep, near Eaton Ohio. The big surprise to me was that the PTO shaft from the mower was connected to the back of the Jeep. I did not know that the old Jeeps came with a PTO.

My Dad bought a new Jeep in '48. He pulled a Nabors brushcutter that ran off the Jeep's pto. He always said that it would cut anything the Jeep could run over!

I have seen older CJs with sickle mowers on the side, looked real nice...

Willys wasn't the only one, either.

Dodge Power Wagons were setup with pto's and granny gears to do double duty as tractors...

Airstream trailers were born then too. I heard they were an aircraft builder, that figured they could sell trailers to the returning vets. It seems to have worked..

You may want to consider a external oil cooler and or deep well trans pan- if it is a automatic- I would also louver the hood to increase air movement- if you have a 5 speed a hand throttle would be nice to help control ground speed, depending on the condition of the fields a cost effective way to gain MASSIVE traction is to put in some lockers- I would recomend the rear first- post some pics

I mowed about 8 acres with a ground driven sickle mower towed behind my old IH scout. Just have to put the truck in 4WD low and go slow. Worked out well, you could even turn on the radio! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here's a link to a picture and description of a guy who brush hogged with his 1953 CJ:

Jeep Brush Hog

Now all you need is a FEL for it and you'd have a real multi-purpose vehicle.

A Jeep that digs holes? I tried to post some photos of a jeep I saw last week with a backhoe attached. after I read your question about the brush hog pulled by a jeep.

Hi all,
I was searching the forums (I'm in the market/starting the search for a new tractor) and saw the Jeep post. You can see lots of information at our Web site Farm Jeep. They almost got the CUT market right, but they had some basic drawbacks with the design.
