bush hogging speed

I have a Shibaura S700 2 cyl. diesel about 18 hp. I have a woods RM59 finish mower. What pto speed should I have the tractor in and also what gear should I run the tractor? Thanks for the help.

Just wanted to make sure that I do not run the RPMs too high I ran the tractor for alittle today with the tractor speed in high and the pto speed in medium. Any thoughts would be great.

You want the PTO speed at 540 RPM. I hope that's marked on your tachometer.
As far as how fast your ground speed should be...that's dependent on the circumstances. However, since it sounds like you're new to this, I suggest you go pretty slow. If you don't know the terrain you're cutting...also go very slow.

If you have a manual for that tractor...read it thoroughly. Most of your questions will be answered there. You also may have better responses if you post your questions in the "Other Brands/Equipment" and "Grey Market" forums.

I agree with Roy, of course, that you want the 540 PTO speed for best results. Most tractors with a tachometer have that speed marked, as he mentioned. If not, it's most likely only a couple hundred rpm less than wide open. If you go wide open on the throttle, then throttle back just enough to hear the change in the sound, you'll probably be about right. That was the method recommended for the Kubota B7100 with no tachometer.

I'm little concerned he has a 2 speed rear PTO, Bird.

warburtonplayer, make sure you use the lower speed setting on your PTO if it does have more then one speed range.
