I just finished installing my new Brush Mower (brush hog) on my Jinma 204. (The brand is Chipper FWIW)

I have a two speed PTO (540 and 1000 rpm) and I'm wondering what the correct speed should be. (assuming a standard gear head ratio)

I've tried both and the tractor seems ok with the higher speed but not sure if the mower is designed for it.. (sure makes a lot of noise, even before contact with the enemy)

BTW. I do have an over-run clutch and definately can see the benefit.

Thanks for any advice or experiences.

Steve

Nearly all common implements sold in USA use 540, it likely will not run long at 1000!

You should follow the manufacturer's recommended PTO speed. If you do not have that information, 540 is the safest. There is an inherent potential for damage and injury using a brush hog in general, using one at the wrong speed raises the risks.

Steve,
I have a 5' KK BH and it recommends 540, I have never run it any higher. Most impliments are 540 as well.

Hopefully you haven't already cut down the PTO shaft to accomodate the over-running clutch. They're for tractors without a 2-stage clutch and/or live PTO. The JM204 has both.

I already cut 2.5" off the shaft to make it fit..

Just going by what my dealer recommended.

I can't see any harm in keeping it in the drive train, Can you??

Probably not for a while, till normal wear makes it start flopping around. Other than that, they're just ugly dirt and grease accumulators.

Creates a little credibility problem for the dealer though, doesn't it.......
