bushhog abuse?

In my case, Yaupon Holly is exactly what I'm talking about. Yes, it does resprout after getting cut back, but tends to shrub more than just make another large trunk. The ball of the shrub does get large, like you said.

If I can get through it one time without tearing up the equipment, I figure I'm home free after that, since I just need to provide discouragement in the future. My only problem is the size of the area I need to discourage...

When I get a chance I'll give it a try. Thanks for the tips.

I assume your manual, as well as Bush Hog's website, show the rating for your rotary cutter, which for the 286 is 2" material. Personally, I wouldn't be concerned if some of the material is 3" diameter.

I've used my heavy duty Landpride 6' rotary cutter on 2+ brush and small trees...BUT, I sure do hate the sound it makes!!! Sounds like a magnitude 7.8 earthquake!! I try to avoid such obstacles.

My Med. duty Woods Brushbull 720 is supposedly rated for 2" woody material. It handles it OK. Bushy plants with multiple 1" to 2" stems make it work pretty hard....you can smell the slip clutch. Single stem, up to 2", appears to be no problem. Occasionally something 3" in diameter goes through. The 3 inchers make a heckuva thump and bog the tractor a bit, but I'm usually through it before I can do anything.

As said above, keep the blades sharp and go slow in the heavy stuff. It's the rocks and the stumps that do the damage.

I used to cut w/out hearing protection. Got off in some brush and clipped a thick branch on the ground. My ears began ringing. Definitely wear the ear protection now. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I haven't found anything I could run over that would hurt the rotary cutter, but have had some saplings fight back and spear the radiator ...ugh
