So, it's time for a land plane. I've been dealing with my 1/4 mile gravel drive for 3 years and it's just time to get the proper tool. ;)

I've found a decent deal on a BushHog brand plane locally.

Anyone out there running one and want to tell me to run away?

That a respected brand, you might not get much feed back. I have their finishing mower and it's a tank....

Maybe not in your area but here a rough cut mower is a "BUSH HOG" regardless the color or the label. I have old two row bedder dropped the bedder blades off and just use the two subsoilers and it one heavy built unit. Have a 72 inch finishing mower bought about 18 or 19 years back and have used it most years for few acres with the last four putting some heavy hours on it keeping newly sprigged coastal mowed to spread. Other than replacing wheel bearings and one belt and many many blades only replaced bearings in one spindle. Shop told me you are not greasing as much as they need. No issue since then. Have a BushHog Estate ztr and it has held up well. I would not be afraid of anything with their name on it.

I have a Bush Hog brand land plane. Nice and heavy built like a tank. Wonderful piece of equipment. There might be nicer ones out there but I don’t have a reason to find out. One of the things I like is the ballades on mine are double edged so when they wear I can flip them over. Also all the wear areas have bolt on wear plates that can be replaced. Lots of nice features. Well designed.

If it's a steal, you probably won't be disappointed, but someone recently asked me to compare one with our EA Xtreme Land Plane.
EA Xtreme is taller, deeper and heavier. Ripper shanks are mounted behind the tube, rather than through it, for maximum durability and rigidity. A much more substantial, solid welded hitch with Category 1 and 2 three point compatibily. USA Made cutting edges. A572 Steel Construction. Thicker, fully formed and welded side plates. Cutting edges are on a sharper, more aggressive 10 degree angle for better results faster. Don't just take my word for it.. Check out this review from a customer who has bought two for his successful driveway transformation/maintenance business.

Here's when Jason took delivery. Notice the difference in the EA and the Frontier on the back of his tractor..

My driveway maintenance is still not 100% figured out. I have a box blad, rake and homemade landplane that was purchased from the previous owner of the house. My drive is 1/2 mile and flat flat flat. Because of that the only great way to shed the water is inducing a pretty good crown to keep the potholes to a minimum. I mow one pass down both sides of the drive. The one feature that I like on my homemade unit is the gravel reclaimer. It is a piece of I-beam 2 foot or so that sticks out off the front corner at a 45 and is slightly elevated at the tip. The land plane stays on the driveway and the reclaimer is off to the side of the driveway. It grabs all the loose stone and works it back into the mix as you are making your passes.

I tried to do that same function last year with my new EA rake, but found the angles on the crown and the side of the road lead to more grass removal on the high side of the road. I would love to see how one of these EA ones works with scarifiers (why I use the blade). Seems like an almost all in one tool.

Bush Hog I'd a good brand and if you can get a deal on the size you need then go for it,

I can't speak to the Land Plane, but we do have a Bush Hog box blade. We were looking and was trying to decide what box blade to get and had narrowed it down to the EA, when my dad stopped by the local Bush Hog dealer and they had a Christmas special going on. We ended up with the Bush Hog SBX72 because we just couldn't beat the price (about $200 difference with the sale and farm discount). Both EA and Bush Hog had the strong frames we were looking for and both appear very well built. I would make the assumption that the quality will carry over to the Land Plane in both models.

My LPGS is Land Pride. My roll over box blade is Bush Hog. The ROBB is built like a tank. Both implements have manual shanks. I use the LPGS primarily to repair pot holes. The ROBB moves material from here to there.

I have an 84” Bush Hog branded land plane. Works great. Only thing I wound up doing was drilling out the pin holes for the 3pt to match my Cat 2 tractor. I prefer not having any bushings to deal with.

Get a hydraulic top-link. Night and day difference. Seems like you cannot a little down pressure on it. I roll it forward a bit from where I’m going to use it, lower it to the driveway, start driving, the roll it back a bit more. Works perfectly.
