As a past long term Mass resident, past town selectman, who over saw town insurance policies and other things, I can say you are lucky to have an insurance commissioner,.. Part of the problem with travelers, progressive and others is, in their eyes there is no margin for profits, therefore, they will not write in the communist wealth,,, When we moved back into Connecticut 4 or so years ago,, a major wake up call. Insurance here is a good 400.00 plus or more per year on each vehicle.. Supposed insurance commission here thinks this is allright. What is really getting me is, I am less than 200 ft out of Holland/Sturbridge MA.,.. They are paying 16 cents per killowatt for electric power. Ct we are paying 38 cents for the same thing and last Thursday the state commissioners approved another 50% increase to be finalized by this coming November.,... Mass has it's problems as other states do.,,, I can tell you outright, much cheaper than CT for anything you want to match... Only thing that got me with Mass' new governor is he couldn't stand that Ford sitting in the back seat being carted around.. $72.000 for a new Cadillac for the governor? On the news and in newspapers,, Only thing I can figure is the back seat of the Ford may have reminded him of riding while handcuffed in earlier years:)

They put you in a service category in an effort to rate you as correctly (sometimes incorrectly) as possible. Its a method to set your premium, generally not an effort to exclude coverage. The most important thing is to be honest with your agent, and if you're the least bit uncomfortable, put it in writing. Agents carry errors and omissions policies to help cover if they screw up your coverage. That's an oversimplification, and of course it's more complicated than that, but that's the gist of it. Just make sure you tell him/her what you're doing for work.
Well, your explanation sounds an awful lot like theirs. That's a good thing! :) Sounds like a big game they play just to set a rate... but then after that, all is forgiven and you are free to go do business as you see fit. Very odd.

The various agents & underwriters mostly tried to place me in one of two categories: full blown "dig up a street" excavation contractor or shallow excavation/grading. I don't think either category fits my little "compact utility tractor service" very well... and I don't think they even know what a 3-Pt hitch is!!! They just keep pointing at the backhoe and make funny faces and strange noises. I think it's something you insurance folks are trained to do! :D

But rather obviously... neither category would seem to include anything like a blade being thrown by a bush-hogger or a post hole digger accidentally digging through somebody's foot... or maybe a PTO stump grinder throwing a rock! Those are the kind of things that keep me from sleeping at night. None have a darn thing to do with either deep or shallow excavation!

Larry - You must pony up the big bucks to live over there in God's country!!! You know I drive right through your town (when they let me)... and there is not a prettier town in all of New England! Taxachusetts is bad... but so is Connecticut. However, rest assured that we will be passing you in record time with Mr. Deval now in charge.

We run ours year round, if a job comes around that we can do, we want to be able to jump on it, and not have the business "shut down". We get a lot less winter then you guys though.

Yeah, for where I am and what I do... and the logistics of switching from tractor & backhoe mode to snowplowing mode... I am pretty much shutdown on the tractor side from Thanksgiving until Tax Day. We can get plowable snow up here anytime in that window... although we had almost nothing in my service area this past winter. Very discouraging. :( Regardless, it seems like the policy will need to remain in effect. As noted earlier... the 5-month downtime is effectively taken into account in the premiums.

Nope! Have you read your Globe today?

Boston Globe - Friday, April 6, 2007 - "Massachusetts posts largest rise in unemployment in the nation over the past year"
"The Massachusetts unemployment rate in February had the largest year-to-year increase of any state in the country, according to a new report. While essentially unchanged from January, the Massachusetts unemployment rate in February was 5.3 percent, up from 4.8 percent in February 2006 and well above the national rate, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a part of the US Department of Labor. That jump of 0.5 percent was the largest year-to-year increase for any state in the country, the bureau reported."

Don't know how it is that you're doing so well down here, but I'm sure not! :( 10.3% property tax increase this year alone... and much worse expected for the coming year thanks to Deval. :( "Live Free or Die" state... Here I come! :)

Yeah, but then you hit the lottery and went over to the (Kubota) dark side! :D I forgive you, of course, for all the help and advice you have given me... but I still envy your old 511 BH and wish you had sold that nifty rig to me! :)

I'm afraid our last couple of trips through your beautiful town were not under the best of circumstances. There was a death in the family. But yes, the day will come when I'll arrange to stop by and see that magnificent orange monster of yours and what a *real* Connecticut estate looks like! :)

I don't know Doug, I know you hate it hear, I have lived hear most of my life. Spent several years in California, You think it is expensive hear. I have always been able to make a great living hear in several different trades. I don't mind paying taxes because I take advantage of what the state offers. My next big investment will be Solar power for my compound and the state will pay for more than 1/2 of the cost. I think if you don't use the states resources then yes it is probably not worth it for you to live hear. I think it is all perspective, If you keep looking at what is wrong with something than it will always be a terrible place. But if you look at what is right with the state and then you can understand why I and so many others love it hear. It is one thing to pay high taxes and not get anything for it. At least is Massachusetts you see where your money is going and you can take advantage of all kinds of programs and incentives if you know were to look. As far unemployment is concerned that is regulated by Global Economics not to mention the moron we have running the country isn't helping things. Unemployment is also trade specific. I am delivering product to a show in the New Convention Center soon and Teamsters is charging me over 44 grand to unload 60 thousand pound of freight. That is about 1 1/2 trailers. of over 80 going in that day. There is money to be made hear in this state. You have to take advantage of opportunity and education that is offered. You do have to recognize the opportunity's 1st though. Are current Governor is a perfect example of a guy that took advantage of there opportunity's that were available to him and has done very well for himself. I will not debate politics as we all have are own opinions but this is one of the best places to live in the country as long as you take advantage of what is offered hear
