When I was a JD dealer parts man the plugs were identified as expansion or welch plugs

They are welch plugs for the casing hole and everyone calls them freeze plugs.

Up date on the little John deere With the busted block ..The leak on the head was just a bent cover . I pulled it off beat it back flat reinstall with new gasket this fixed the head leak on the block ..After much debate... Calls And E-mails... I found a man In Tyler ,TX who owns a small company called Cast and Repair. His web site said that "God mends brokend hearts ,,we mend cast Iron" though this was a nice saying,, He "pinned" the crack in the block then JB welded over the pins .Also pulled out the freeze plugs and install a polemier coating over the crack on the inside of the water jacket. and done this with the engine still in the tractor . I was only out $325 and 42 gallons of Diesel for 2 round trips to Tyler ... I was very lucky ....

Thanks for everyones help on here

Danny

I've seen those type of cracks repaired by just using a rad sealer and tapping along the crack with a ball pien hammer to pein the edges together. It lasted until the next time the engine needed overhauling. Good luck with your repair and let us know how it works out long term.
