Would it slide off just like the other end goes on the tractor? I haven't looked that closely at that end of the shaft

Usually I use a vise to change them out.
The drive shaft should just slide apart. They are two piece.

Half will stay with the tractor.

A good vise is the platform I use too.

No special tools are required. A hammer and a large screwdriver are used to remove a retaining ring either on the inside or outside of each cup of the cross bearing. Once removed, use a smaller diameter socket in a vise to press the cup out of the yoke. Repeat for the other 3 cups and if the yokes are not damaged, take the short yoke and a cup to the farm store for a match. If your vise jaws will open far enough, you can press the 2 cups in at the same time tight against the cross bearing. Reinstall the retaining rings and your done. Hardest part is not loosing the needle bearings out of the cups, the factory installed grease should hold them in place.

I would suggest inspecting the U-joint on the other end of the PTO shaft by the mower. If one end is bad the other may be also.

There should be no looseness or slop in the joint.
