Wow, you folks are great! I sincerely appreciate your comments. I haven't been on the site for a while due to a trip to Isla Mujeres (across from Cancun) to celebrate our anniversary with my bride of ten years.
Knowing nothing about timber and its value, I retained a consultant who inventoried the trees, published a prospectus inviting closed bids, evaluated the companies bidding, prepared the contract with the purchaser, and is monitoring the cutting. Cost 10% of the bid, but to me was worth every penny, as I believe I have the comfort of obtaining market price and the protection of a well thought out contract.
I've learned from you folks, and from conversations with the logger, that the locusts will serve well as fence posts. I've been told I should cut them after the sap has gone down in the fall (they won't rot as quickly, apparently). I've also been told they'll quickly dull the saw chain.
My current plan is to wait until they finish cutting, talk to some people about clearing some or all of the area so I can convert it to pasture, and then to decide how to proceed. My logger is in the "buy a D6, use it and then sell it" camp.
Again, thanks for all your help.
