Buy a dozer?

What did the article recommend as to the best way to sell your timber and pulp wood?
Every time I sell some I feel like I'm getting ripped off.

Hap,

Find a good timber agent. He will work for YOU. He should cruise your timber that is for sale, mark each tree at the stump and breast high on the tree, and provide an inventory. The inventory should list ALL the trees for sale by species, size and total how many 1000 boardfeet are in the sale.

The agent should also advertise so that you get a fair number of buyers. We had a closed bid auction at the timber site on a given day. The buyers handed us their sealed bids and we took them to the tail gate on my truck to open up. Wrote down the numbers and names, found the highest bidder and sold the timber.

There should be a contract between you and the buyer. The state should be able to help you with the contract. NC has a book that the loggers are suppsed to work to. Mention the book and they are obligated to certain practices. Your forestry department can help on this one. NC has a phone number that one can call to get timber prices over the last quarter. Timber prices go up and down but the number at least gives you an idea.

Then there are taxes.

I'm sure there is more info I can give if you ask questions. There are previous threads on selling timber as well.

Hope this helps,
Dan McCarty

HAP: just like the post below the best way the artical said is to get a state forester, and or hire a timber grader. also talk to the local FFA class. When I was in FFA we went to about 4 or 5 places marking and grading timber.

like mentioned make sure to count every tree for size and keep a record of species, designation and # of bd feet. some trees are only good for pulp others can bring 3~10.00 per bd foot for venere grade stuff!!! also stated that a loggers cost should be about 15 cents / bd foot. lots of time they say they want a 1/3 of the log, so a really good venere log can get 1200.00 they get 1/3 of that so they get 400, for what should be only a 50.00 pay out nets them a hole lot more using the 1/3 cost shares... remember to mark EVERYTHING and watch what goes out and keep the record is the best way...

grade logs are more valueable than pallet, blocking or tie logs and usually bring 40~80 cents / bd foot. these are usually cut along with pulp and other wood so the logging cost for them should only be about 10 cents / bd foot... they still want to do SHARES with a 60/40 so for a log that/s got 100 BF the owner only gets 60bf logger gets 40bf but by bd ft he should only get 10 bf to log that out...

least that is pretyt much the way the forester explains it...

try and do a google shearch for the artical it probably is posted on-line someplace and is very informitive..

Wow, you folks are great! I sincerely appreciate your comments. I haven't been on the site for a while due to a trip to Isla Mujeres (across from Cancun) to celebrate our anniversary with my bride of ten years.

Knowing nothing about timber and its value, I retained a consultant who inventoried the trees, published a prospectus inviting closed bids, evaluated the companies bidding, prepared the contract with the purchaser, and is monitoring the cutting. Cost 10% of the bid, but to me was worth every penny, as I believe I have the comfort of obtaining market price and the protection of a well thought out contract.

I've learned from you folks, and from conversations with the logger, that the locusts will serve well as fence posts. I've been told I should cut them after the sap has gone down in the fall (they won't rot as quickly, apparently). I've also been told they'll quickly dull the saw chain.

My current plan is to wait until they finish cutting, talk to some people about clearing some or all of the area so I can convert it to pasture, and then to decide how to proceed. My logger is in the "buy a D6, use it and then sell it" camp.

Again, thanks for all your help.
