buy sub soiler or rent ditch witch?

I used a subsoiler for sprinkler poly, and I also used it for dog fence wire.

It was kind of overkill for the wire, but worked fine. I duck-taped a 1/2" 90-degree PVC electrical conduit to the bottom back of the blade and fed the wire down through it from the spool hung on another piece of conduit clamped onto the top of the subsolier with a vice-grips.

Later, I added some more wire to the install down the sandy beach and into the lake our property abuts so the dog can go down to the water but not too far along the shore (could swim around the containment, but doesn't). For this addition, I made my own mini version of something similar. I welded a piece of 1/4" x 2" flat at about a 80 degree angle through a slot at the end of a 6' piece of 1-1/2" sch-40 scrap steel pipe. A added a pointy piece at the end angled even more. Then I put a piece of 1/2" OD steel tubing bent back at the end. I used a long tow-strap to pull this through the lake and sand using the tractor up on the yard where it could get good traction. Went through the sand and wet clay lake bottom like butter. I found it easiest with this setup to just unspool the wire along side where it would be installed and just let it feed into the tube without any spool or anything. This setup required me manually "guide" the wire-installer thingy while my wife drove the tractor and ignored my shouted directions to go/stop/turn...

With the addition of another slot and hitch pin on the other end of the pipe, it could be connected directly to the tractor drawbar when using eniterly on dry land and would probably work well without manual guidance.
