Buying Advice Buy used or new? Need small tractor for 6ac land

/ Buy used or new? Need small tractor for 6ac land #21
Hey guys,
A local guy wants to sell me his Ford Jubilee/2000 for about $3500. Of course, it's negotiable he said. It doesn't come with a shredder or anything. He said it has no rusts and he has always kept it under a roof.

What do ya'll think of the Jubilee for this price? I believe it's 35hp?

There is a pretty big difference between a Jubilee ('53 NAA) and a 2000. Yes, they are roughly the same hp, but were produced more than a decade apart. The NAA will be a 1953-54 model, and IIRC the 2000 didn't come out until 1965 (someone correct me if I'm wrong.)

I purchased my Jubilee a couple years ago for $3100, and it had been 'restored' about 10-15 years prior, i.e. looks like it was painted with a broom. Everything worked good on it though and the motor had recently been rebuilt. I replaced a couple seals, new set of brakes, etc and have put a few hundred hours on it since then. Great little tractor, and many of the parts that fit 8N's also fit it, so I can get parts almost anywhere for dirt cheap. Also very easy to work on.

I use a 5' bush hog on mine and that's as big as it will handle in tough going. It doesn't have live PTO so the PTO stops when you push in the clutch.

Hard to say on the price, sounds a little high to me unless its in great shape. Have someone that knows a lot about tractors go look at it with you. There are a lot of things that a trained eye will catch that could cost lots of time and money later.

Do you know him? Know that he has always serviced it, not just kept it in a shed? If so I like the deal.

so is it a jubilee ( naa ) or a 4 cyl 2000 or a 3 cyl 2000

4 cyl 2000 has some better trans options available.. like a 5spd with live pto. 2000 has a 4 or 6 spd non livce pto, and an 8spd could be live.. and a rare 6spd that could be live.

3500 for a 3 cyl 2000 is good even if it is a 4spd, non live pto with no ps. a lil high for a 4 cyl with 5spd and live pto.. but doable.. and still too high for a NAA... IMHO

.

Close.

in 63 ford came out with a 4 cyl 2000.. pretty much an updated 601.

both shared the same 134ci engine.. other than sheet metal.. a very similar tractor in capability ot a naa... especially if it had a 4spd trans.

here's the major differences. 00/01/000 had better axle seal / hub setup vs the 'axle nut' style the naa had on the rear axle.

hyd refinements and improvements on the 00/01/000 vs the naa hyd setup.. though the basic principle of the unloading valve was the same.

00/01/000 had more trans options.. namely a 5pd trans that could have live pto.

PS.. to cloud the issue even more.. late 60 or 61 there was an industrial 2000 out in a new color scheme with a heavier front axle design.. a 2030 for instance...

once you hit 65, the 3 cyl units came out..

We just bought 6ac (see pic for terrain) of country land in Texas (hill country area). Half is open field, half is treed.

What's a good general-purpose tractor for cutting grass and doing basic landscaping? There are lots of used Ford 8ns in the area and they are going for about 2k. We'd like to keep our budget around that level.

Should we buy used or new? how safe is an old Ford 8n without a rollover bar? etc.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Two years ago I found a 1951 Farmall Super A with a mid-mount 6-ft sicklebar mower and 3pt hitch for $1300. It's in good running condition with the exception of 1st gear (the fork in the tranny needs to be adjusted).

It's less than 20 hp but with only 6 acres of mowing/landscaping, it'll work for you. And there are other types of mowers available (check eBay) for the Super A.

you aren't going to get a lot of tractor for $2000 unless you just luck up on a deal. Lets get you in the 3-4K range, now we are talking reality for a good used but maintained older tractor.

One of your most used tasks will probably be bush hogging. Live PTO, 2 stage clutch will be very much appreciated for this. Single stage clutch will get the job done but the 2 stage clutch is what I consider a "bush hogging tractor".

A two speed rear is nice too. Again, just a straight transmission will get the job done but with a hi-lo rear end, another well appreciated feature.

I have a 1957 TO-35 Ferguson that would work well for what you want. Hi-Lo rear, 2 stage clutch, a real work horse for its size. I also have a Yanmar 2200. Good tractor for what it is but won't hold a candle to that old Ferguson. For the price range you speak of, look for old iron but remember to get it with 2 stage clutch and if possible hi-lo rear. I think you would be happy.

If you have any mechanical ability at all these older tractors are pretty easy to maintain. The newer diesels pretty much require a mechanic. With the older ones, you find a site that is pretty much specialized in what you have and those guys will keep you and it running. I have great sucess on this site with my Yanmar, this is a CUT site. The old iron may require you to go to more of an antique restoration site, but they are out there.

If you know of or see a TO-35 Ferguson anywhere around, take time to go look at it even if it is not for sale. Ask questions, tell the guy you are looking for one and he may know of one close by. Get a feel of it if he'll let you drive it. This tractor would be perfect for your jobs and your wallet.

There are other old tractors out there that will get the job done as well, but I like my old 35 Ferguson. If I had a new tractor, I like it so well I'd have to keep it too.

This is NOT a Massey Ferguson, Ferguson was in the days before it merged with Massey Harris to become the Massey Ferguson.

A 135 Ferguson is the same tractor, just a newer model and will cost more.

I have seen several Farmall Cubs for sale for $1000 this year, no equipment at that price and a smaller tractor. But it might work until you find what you want. If planning a garden, it will be a good lil cultivating tractor later on. Also, with a belly mower, it makes a good finish mowing tractor, mower in the middle, just an oversize lawn mower but bigger, stronger, more for the guy with more than just a small yard.

The post above this one about the SuperA, that is a size bigger than a Cub and he is right, it will work well for you but I don't think they have live PTO, 2 stage clutch or Hi-Lo rearend. But if you find one at that price, jump on it while you look for what you really want. It will come in handy for gardens or finish mowing. That really is a cultivating tractor though.

But the TO-35 or 135 Ferguson would do you right.

I agree. I have a 1964 MF135 diesel deluxe with multipower that I bought in Jul06 for $3600. It's more than enough tractor for 6 acres.
I mentioned the Super A because I was trying to stay within the OPs $2K budget.
