Start at the best mil vehicle forum on the planet: Steelsoldiers.com. There are vendors that have them but are usually $$$. Check Egay also.

Good luck.

A friend of mine that owns a BIG landscape company bought a 5 ton dump like that. They fixed it up nice and pinted it white so it wouldn't scare the customers. After a while, it just sat because it was really uncomfortable to drive for long periods of time. It is available for sale and when I drove it for a test drive, I really didn't like it very much.

If I was doing some kind of powerline costruction through steep hills or swamps it might be nice, but my 4800 takes me about as far as I'd want to go to build what we build. If I lived on a ranch in Wyoming, it would be my vehicle of choice. :D

I think the OP needs a solid older big block gas or med duty diesel dump that'll handle 5-7 ton loads for his work projects. I think we're getting a bit off topic suggesting he buy a 5 tonner.

I don't know where you live in NH but you can get a medium duty dump truck for a pretty good price. I found a few in the NH CL. A couple need a little TLC but the prices are discounted accordingly. NAPA has just about any brake or driveline parts for GM trucks, if needed. They are easy beasts to work on. Very low tech and they'll haul 7 or 8 tons. See below. The last one is ready to go and if you didn't want the plow blade you could recoup some $$$

Happy hunting.

Old F-450/550's are cheap around here in 2wd flavor. They seem to hold up well to overloading and abuse. Local tractor shop has a old style 450 superduty with a rollback on it. He hauls up to about 15,000 lb tractors on it.

The down side is in soft ground he cut the pinion off trying to get moving while loaded with a Ford TW on the back. Far overloaded though.

I went to look at the 4700 today. I knew in advance that the ratio was 4.1 but I figured I should check it out anyway. It had juice brakes and no hitch or plate in the back to mount a plate to. (Not that this would be hard to fab, but it would be annother task for me after the sale.) As advertised the dump body was brand new and had it's own sub-frame. The truck started, idled, and ran great. The 5 speed transmission was a little weird the way it had some slop right before it engaged, and it wasn't impressed with my downshifts back into first, but I could probably get used to it. The guy selling it seemed nice enough, and ran through all the used car pitches (we only marked it up 1200...what would be the price that YOU would like to take it home...my manager said you could let you use it for a week...we are all about making friends...) But when he asked me what the ideal truck would be, it was clear that his truck just wasn't it. I didn't waste his time with a low ball, since at the end, I guess I didn't really want it.

I think you guys saved me from making a mistake. Thanks.

I'm going to look at a C7500 with a Duramax engine, air brakes, pintle hitch, and plow frame on Wed. It is rated for 26K, has about the same miles, and is about the same price. I'll keep you informed.

Those are very nice trucks for the price. The 6 cyl in line Duramax has an excellent reputation and a longer B50 than the DT466. Airbrakes are much more reliable than juice brakes and the plow frame may open up some other money making avenues for you.

I now realize that my 1 ton dump is simply not up the tasks that I ask of it. I feel like I am pushing it to (and at times beyond) its limits nearly every time I use it. Most of its use is hauling 3" roadbase up a short but incredibly steep hill.
Dont know what kind, and how many tractors you have available, but here in Holland most construction site earthmoving is hauled with a 150hp farm tractor and an 18 ton dumptrailer. My brother does small landscaping and construction, and has bought a 10 ton dumptrailer which his 65hp tractor handles pretty well, but it gets much further through the bog than any 10t dumptruck.

Off course when hauling the roadbase in from a quarry at a couple of miles distance, you might not want to go this route, but if you only drive on your on property and have a spare tractor, theres no better way to haul, than to cut the cab off a worn out dumptruck and bend the frame rails into a V towbar. The load which would normally rest on the front axle, will now rest on the towbar giving your tractor great traction. Tractors have enough low gears so you never have to worry about burning a clutch up that hill.
