Buying a mower and 40 acres of trees

for something like that, you should get the feller/buncher attachment for it, that's a LOT of trees to do without it.. it grabs the tree securely, then the hydraulic chain saw comes out, and cuts it, then, it gets debarked, and cut to length, then, the grapple let's you place the log where you want it.

being able to finance there without the need to go through my credit union.
Have you checked with your CU? My credit Union wouldn't touch a tractor loan. Dealer financing may be more than just an advantage... it may be your only choice.

Good point but I would just like to point out that TX ain't CA, if you take my meaning. :)

Yes, my CU will finance a tractor.

IDK I may be the voice of reason, or the voice of stupidity.....but to spend 50K on logging equipment (the feller/buncher appears to be around a 20k attachment used) to earn 1K a week, that's almost a year of (dangerous) work just to break even. Of course you can sell the equipment when you're done. But is it a good idea for someone with no experience with any kind of tractor to take on logging? Would it be feasible to have a professional logging company cull the large trees, then you can buy a smaller tractor for everything else?

YES, the OP has 40 acres of trees, so, it would be a BIG chore to fell all those!. but it depends if the OP wants to do this quickly, and get some money in exchange for the wood, or wants to use the wood himself, for a wood stove or make lumber out of it..

I don’t think the op wants to be a logger. I thought the op wanted to cut a few trees on the weekend while working on thinning his woods. I didn’t the feller buncher was a serious recommendation either. If log prices are good in your area and you have good timber it wouldn’t take very long to get $1000 worth.

I went to a Kubota dealer today and got a price on two tractors: M6060 cab with hydrostatic shuttle and bucket - $42,000
L6060 with Hydrostatic Transmission - $46,000.
0%down, 0% interest for 60 mo.
I'm not too keen on the Tier 4 emissions crap on the tractors nor was I keen on the plastic cab top and wheel guards on the Kubota.
I'm most likely going to go 2013 or older tractor to keep away from the new emission upgrades. I'm starting to like the Kiota after reading reviews and watching videos.
The tractor would be used for general use around the property and not necessarily to recoup the cost of the tractor.

My friend down the road was making about $1000/wk cutting a few trees and having them hauled to the local timber yard.

Why not have him do the same with your property and share the income?

I've got about 40 acres of trees as well and am looking at having a logger come in with his feller/buncher and other heavy equipment. I won't end up with as much money, but it will be done and I won't have to risk injury or maintain equipment. There are forestry management companies that will market your timber for you as well and be sure you get a fair price, etc. - they usually charge 10% which after finding out what all they do seems reasonable to me.
