my owners manual calls for 550 CCA...can I move up to a 650 or even a 950 CCA battery?

With batteries, more is better. I would buy the largest battery that will fit into the battery box. 12VDC is 12VDC no matter how large the battery may be.

If they'll fit, sure.
When got the batter for mine, I didn't want to spend the money on a "tractor" battery so I measured my batter tray and said I wanted the biggest battery they had that fit that size.

Buy the biggest that will fit. Just take note of how the terminals are layed out as you don't want to buy one that has the positive terminal on the wrong side. Also (at least with my Kubota) the battery sits in front of the radiator. You don't want to go so large that you restrict air flow needed to cool the tractor.

I'd also say go with a brand make - i.e. Interstate, Diehard, etc.

Sanels (NH chain) re-brade Excide which is also a decent brand.

I bought a cheaper battery that cracked about 14 months after puchase. Store stood firm with 12-month warrnty - I don't shop there anymore.
