Ted -- will this type PHD work on a Kubota BX SCUT? As you are probably aware, the BX's TPH is quite low to the ground and I worry that the auger will drag during transport and/or it will be difficult to get positioned vertically for boring.

ps:
Yes, I know Kubota makes larger tractors... :)

Thanks and regards,
Wrooster

Don't have one but if you look at the pictures you can see the pivot point has quite a bit of adjustment. Use the hole closest to the top-link attach point and it should really hoist it in the air.

Wrooster, yes we build our compact hole diggers just for BX's and other SCUTs such as the new 1000 series JD, Mahindra Max etc. They also work good on the really small compacts like B series Kubotas and comparable models. Besides having the clearance to lift the auger out of the ground, they can do that with a standard 48" long auger with a 2" shaft so you don't have to buy a special odd sized auger down the road. I do know Kubota builds larger tractors but there is a HUGE market for the SCUTs and we have several attachments made just for them.
Thanks for the question.

I have a Massey GC2610 which is similar in size and recently bought a Speeco digger totaling about $750.00. The soil here is sandy for a foot or two and then gravel. My biggest problem is that it drills too quickly if I'm not very careful. If I want a plumb hole, I need to level the rear wheels to each other and then keep moving the tractor rearwards while the hole is drilling. If I don't, the hole will not be verticle when finished, as the movement of the arm moves the auger foreward as it goes down. The next problem with using a small tractor is that there isn't sufficient travel unless I lift the front end into the air with my loader, in order to dig the last 6" of a 4' hole. In any case It still works for me. Straightening a crooked hole and making it a little deeper is WAY easier then doing it all by hand. I have over 100 posts to instal on my own property and if there isn't any work to be hired for, I expect to recoup at least 1/2 of my money selling the auger.

Off topic but ......proud you will be. I have a bx2230 with around 700 hours on it. It has a loader, slasher and grader blade. It goes pretty much anywhere and has a good go at climbing anything. I built my driveway with it which involved spreading around 2500 tonnes of roadbase in two days. All I wanted out of my new tractor was that it could do everything the BX could do (especially go anywhere it could go) only on a bigger scale.

I am uncertain if you made a typo above. The reason I say this is that I have moved and spread 20 tons of 3/4" crusher run in a day with my BX, and based on that experience I don't see how you could possibly move and spread 2500 tons of similar gravel road base in two days using a BX with a FEL and a grader blade. A large tandem axle dump truck hauls about 20 tons of gravel. So 2500 tons is 125 dump truck loads. That's a lot of material. Perhaps you could move it in two days with a large wheeled front end loader and a proper road grader -- but using a BX equipped with a 1/4 cu yd FEL and a ~4' wide grader blade??? There is something you are not telling us here.

Wrooster - if they drop spread the gravel while driving along yes, 2500 tons is possible to level and grade in two days if he is just fine leveling the bumps! But I agree grading 125 truckloads of stone from piles is streching things - a lot.. I thought I did a good days work with 80 tons to level and distribute.

In response to post hole diggers and their abilities you are really dealing with two almost completely different categories of diggers. One would be the light-duty diggers such as those built by Worksaver or Speeco. They are fairly light weight and break down easily into three or four pieces- the yoke that goes onto the lift arms, the crane that lifts and lowers the gearbox and the auger. I call these light-duty because they don't weigh that much and they are fairly easy to take on and off the tractor. They cost between $400 and $700 dollars.

The other type of digger is the heavy-duty type such as a full-sized Danuser. They are much heavier built as well as weighing much more. This summer I was trying to dig some post holes for a pole building. My Worksaver wouldn't penetrate very well, even when using a 6' bar for additional down pressure. When I got my Danuser it's additional weight allowed it to dig to depth quite easily.

How well the digger without hydraulic down pressure works is a matter of weight primariy.

Hello. I bought a post hole digger from Everything Attachments. I bought the one with the heavy duty gearbox...model 6900 I think. It drills right in every time. Hard pack, sod, gravel, rock hard clay and pretty much everything. I won't deny that those guys in Texas may have something different - concrete soil - but this auger tip just bites and goes in fast. I see no need for down pressure here in South Eastern Wisconsin soil conditions. In fact, I have learned to lift it out about every foot to avoid it drilling in too fast like a cork screw. $1200 for a PHD? For me the money was not much of an issue either but unless you are drilling hundreds of holes or doing it for a living to me $800 seemed like it could buy one to last my lifetime. Very happy with Everything Attachments delivery too. Digging holes for a fence this week and man it does a great job.
