Buying a Tractor

Turf tires are easiest on the lawn, R1 (AG) tires best in the field, R4 (Industrial) tires a good compromise and best for a multi-purpose tractor (and while I'm not unhappy with my R1 tires, if I'd been thinking when I bought the tractor, I'd have specified radial R4s/w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif).

I notice a big difference in weight (according to the brochures) between the compact Kubota and NH. The difference must be more than just paint. I've looked them both over and on the surface I sure can't identify enough of a difference between them to account for the weight differential. What accounts for the difference?

Gordon - I don't know; I was asking the question, not making a point. If they're made in the U.S., they pretty much have to be made by Perkins, and I don't think Perkins makes engines as small as would be required by the smaller Boomers, so that pretty much answers that.

The NH website says they're "assembled" in GA, but nothing more specific, which also answers the question in a left-handed sort of way, I guess.

Sorry Mark but I would like to know the answer to that and I thought you knew it. Perkins is the only diesel made in the U. S. that might be small enough to fit in a boomer?
A boomer doesn't come with special tools and a engine rebuild kit does it ? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Gordon - no, no, I wasn't being testy, just saying that I was asking.

As far as I know, Perkins doesn't build any diesels that are designed for use in tractors under 28hp, I think. They make some in the 11-24hp range, but they're designed for generators and other stationary equipment (rated at 3600 rpm, for example), so they wouldn't work very well.

Bird, I didn't see any option for Radial tires of any tread pattern from Kubota. I probably would not have bought them anyway, but you mentioned Radial R4 tires......

Wen, it's my understanding (possibly erroneous) that Kubota does not offer radial tires as an option, but at least for some sizes, you can get radial tires elsewhere, as Mark did. I just bought the tractor as it was, but if I'm buying tires, I don't want anything but radials on any of my vehicles, even including trailers. So, if I had thought about it and told my dealer that's what I wanted, it's a pretty safe bet he'd have gotten them if they were available, whether from Kubota or another source (of course, it would have cost extra).
