Buying a used rototiller landpride

Thanks for the info Bird I bought the tiller and will get it next week. The rear door needs to be fixed other than that it appears to be in excellent shape. Just hope I that I didn't pay to much for it but it's to late now it's a done deal.

You and poor maintance don't go in the same sentence. If you had the tiller for 5 years and never had to add any grease to the gearbox and you see no leaks from the gearbox then why check it you already know it's full from past experience--right? Changing the grease sounds like a downright messy job-yuck.

Gordon, changing the grease is not much worse than packing wheel bearings, if you have a big pan to put under it and a little varsol for solvent to clean everything. But I don't want to do it without having a new gasket on hand for the cover. I think you probably got a bargain. The dealer tells me my old Bush Hog 40" ought to be worth $500-$600. Dinged up rear doors seem to be common and easily fixed, although mine's never needed anything. I do a little garden tilling for others; some for money, some for friends, and wish I had more of that kind of work.

Bird I thought $1000. was a fair price for that tiller the only thing that bothered me about getting the landpride was the cost of replacement parts---very high. But hopefully I won't need any for a while.

The reason that there is a good market for a tiller in this area is Amish. They are not allowed to have any gas tillers only horses to plow with. They have been asking me for a while why I didn't have a tiller that they would hire me instead of the other man. I've already done grade work for some and skidding for others and the best thing they all live within 10 miles of the house, no long travel time. It is a gamble but they are all good pay cash money on the spot. So if it works out half as well as I think it should pay for itself in the spring and then some.
Couldn't pass on this tiller now because in the spring tillers are few and very far between other than buying a new one and the price of a new one is crazy!!!

Sounds like you're in an enviable position, Gordon. Unfortunately, in my area we don't have any of the Amish and nearly everyone has his own tractor and/or a walk behind tiller for the vegetable garden, so I'm not going to get much of that kind of business.

Gordon, I told you nearly a month ago that I ought to check the chain case on my tiller, since the manual says to clean and change the grease every 100 hours, and I hadn't done that in 2 or 3 years. Well, I finally bought a new gasket and a couple of cans of grease, and today I pulled the cover off and that sucker's still full of grease that looks just as good and clean as it did when I put it in there. So, I just put the cover back on anddecided to leave well enough alone.
